Grey Shoulder-knot Lithophane ornitopus North Antrim March26. Another moth which sees out the worst of the winter weather hidden deep in the woods, reappearing as it warms up. #moths #mothsmatter #teammoth @ulsterwildlife.bsky.social @savebutterflies.bsky.social @europebutterfly.bsky.social
The anti-mothing weather continues on the coast ~ not much to report recently with micros especially hard to come by on windy, cool nights. Here's a nice example of Agonopterix propinquella (the Black-spot Buff), the 2nd of 2026 for us.

My initial id was so wrong! The caterpillar has now matured and it turned out to be a Square-spot Rustic. This morning i put it in a tub of suitable substrate (soil mixed with a few wood chippings) and it buried into it to pupate.

Cydia strobilella from Spruce Cones.
Collected Norway Spruce cones on 21/03 in NEHerts and today a Cydia strobilella (Spruce Seed Moth) emerged. So far (4 sites) a 100% record on collections of cones, definitely worth trying if you have Spruce. #TeamMoth
A nice fresh looking Grey Dagger agg. - Acronicta psi agg. - moth-trapping at CIMA, Tarifa, Cadiz Province, Andalucia, Spain on the 26th of March 2026.
A leaf-mine on Lentiscus sp. is rather old but looks just right for Acalyptris minimella. - moth-trapping at CIMA, Tarifa, Cadiz Province, Andalucia, Spain on the 26th of March 2026.
The view from the trap - sadly there is a lot of habitat like this in this coastal area, where nearly everything you can see is an introduced alien plant! And dominated by massive Eucalyptus trees. - moth-trapping at CIMA, Tarifa, Cadiz Province, Andalucia, Spain on the 26th of March 2026.
Part 2 - Moth trapping; CIMA, Tarifa, Cadiz Province, Andalucia, Spain on the 26th of March 2026 - Highlights included; Grey Dagger agg. & leaf-mine of Acalyptris minimella. - see alt button for photos #teammoth #spanishmoths www.facebook.com/permalink.ph...
#TeamMoth I’ve not had any opportunity to trap since 23/24th but in the meantime I’ve learnt a little from the more experienced moth-ers and stocked up on a couple of supplies 🤪😉 #MothsMatter
Saturday 28th March
The only highlight from my early morning walk was this Angle Shades caterpillar, at Applecross. It wasn't on a foodplant and so far i've tried it with Nettle & Broad-leaved Dock both of which have been ignored!

Top moth news !! Staying sharp as you age is all about discerning a brown-line bright-eye from a bright-line brown eye 😬😀 #TeamMoth www.theguardian.com/environment/...

Proof that contrary to what our families are constantly telling us, an obsession with moths is actually healthy 😆 #TeamMoth
Hebrew Character moth on lichen, sideview showing the marking that resembles the Hebrew letter "nun" from whence the moth gets its name. Archive photo
It got down to close to zero last night, not great for #teamMoth here in Cambs. 2x Hebrews, that was it...
Highlight from an almost barren actinic was this caterpillar. Any ideas? #teammoth
Zomariana doxasticana - small brown moth with four dark markings that partially track the outline of a circle
A Dasygaster sp. - relatively large moth with brown wings that gave a pattern of darker wavy lines
Stegasta variana - new record for our garden- micro moth with forewings that are cream and brown
Oenochroma vinaria - Pink Bellied moth - large moth with reddish brown wings that have a pale yellow line running horizontally and a dark edged white spot on each wing. Wings are slightly blurred as the moth didn’t fully settle
Still very rainy in the Perth Hills but at least 12 species of moth visited our Perth Hills garden last night (along with hordes of flying ants!), including these:
Zomariana doxasticana
Dasygaster sp.
Stegasta variana (NFG)
Oenochroma vinaria

Short walk along the old railway in Endon and thought I'd have a look inside a knapweed seed heads. First one and bingo , somebody home! Metzneria metzneriella, larva, Meadow Neb. Then watched a Lapwing give a brief display, (love Lapwings) a good day 😊 #teammoth
Two moths I found last year both found on 24/05/25 they both seem reasonably distinctive but I have strugled to ID them ever since I first saw them... #teammoth any help appreciated.
Common Quaker - a side view of a pale brown moth on a piece of slate
Small Quaker - a side view of a pale brown moth on a piece of slate
Hebrew Character - a side view of a pale brown moth, with a small black marking on a piece of slate
Frosted Green - a side view of a mottled green moth on a piece of slate
Six Common Quaker, six Small Quaker, three Hebrew Character and a Frosted Green. A nice quiet start to my garden mothing year. I get a bit overwhelmed when I get lots of moths when it warms up a bit!

Oak Eggar Caterpillar
Oak Eggar Caterpillar
A quiet night with just 13/4 involving the usual Drab/Hebrew/Quaker combo. Best find this afternoon was this Oak Eggar crawler... #teammoth #norfolkmoths
Leopard Moth, possibly an ex-Leopard Moth.
Spent this afternoon trawling back through my old Twitter archive, looking for missing photos of Moths I had recorded, before I was a Moth-er, when I knew even less than now.
Found quite a few, & cleared up some mysteries.
Even better was finding a NFM/NFG Leopard Moth from 25/07/2019 #teammoth
Powdered Quaker

Well @gardenmothscheme.bsky.social survey last night VC61
A single very tired looking Hebrew Character

Garden Moth Survey night in Hunstanton, just 1 Common Quaker in the trap on a cold, windy night.
Put our Merlin app on as we checked trap, it decided to change to Portuguese. Eventually got it back to English.
Few nights off now! #teammoth #norfolkmoths
Any recommendations for tick repellent, either for clothes or skin or both? I know a lot of you do field work and I’ve already had my first this year from the garden #teammoth #hantsbirds
Hebrew Character moth, a grey-brown moth with an arched black mark on each wing, in an egg tray
Large, plump green caterpillar with faint lateral lines and round spots
But if a come-down last night: 1/1

Temperature down to 4°C, squawly winds - my expectations were probably too high!
Big caterpillar found yesterday afternoon mind you. Angle Shades, perhaps?
