Cornifrons ulceratalis is still an incredibly rare migrant/vagrant in Andalucia! I have seen 140 before this year in 14 years of trapping, but 128 were all last year in an exceptional year for the species. So, the remaining 12 were seen over 13 years! This year has been a good year for the species with 12 already seen, but 7 of these were all on the 9th of April. |Here is the first photo of a species with varied markings. - moth-trapping on the 9th of April 2026 at CIMA, Tarifa, Cadiz Province, Andalucia, Spain.

This has to be a favourite migrant moth of mine with its huge 'nose' - Etiella zinckenella. Yes, that is right - I saw 756 Small Mottled Willows - Spodoptera exigua in one night in my moth traps! And on a world or European stage then this moth is much more important as a species than my last photo - this is Eupithecia iberica, which is resident at this site in reasonable numbers (I trapped 11 this night and it is only known from Iberia). Here is a phycitinid pyralidae moth that is either Pima boisduvaliella or Pima marocana and Bolonia is a site where i have seen them before. But the question is in this area, which species do we have? Is it all boisduvaliella or all marocana or a mix. We need to work it out - so this moth will be checked further. My initial guess is boisduvaliella from external features. - moth-trapping at Bolonia, near Tarifa, Cadiz Province, Andalucia, Spain on the 31st of March 2026.

I thought that this early Footman sp - Eilema sp would have to be Eilema caniola! - the common species in this part of Andalucia? But with a closer look I could see the wings were too dark grey and the orange colour was too orange and extended behind the head and along the costa? - Surely this was Scarce Footman - Eilema complana? (But it isn't supposed to be anywhere near this SW corner of Spain according to the maps I have access to?) Can someone please confirm my ID? - i have never got on well with Footmen! - moth-trapping at Bolonia, near Tarifa, Cadiz Province, Andalucia, Spain on the 31st of March 2026.

This is the Brown Silver-line - Petrophora chlorosata and is not a common moth to see at CIMA. It's food plant is Bracken - Pteridium aquilinum which occurs in the Alcornocales at sites such as Huerta Grande, to the east or north east of CIMA. And on this night there were winds from the east and north east at CIMA. So this moth must have been a wanderer dispersed from the Alcornocales on these winds. It is not really a migrant - so is 'wanderer' the best term to use for its movement? - moth-trapping at CIMA, Tarifa, Cadiz Province, Andalucia, Spain on the 30th of March 2026. (I know the moth well from Britain where it is very common on acidic soils with Bracken )

And on the same night I trapped this moth - Red-headed Chestnut - Conistra erythrocephala which feeds on a mix of tree species but especially Oak - Quercus sp. Again the likely origin of this moth is from the North East where such quality woodland occurs in the Alcornocales. So another sign of dispersal of such wanderers. - moth-trapping at CIMA, Tarifa, Cadiz Province, Andalucia, Spain on the 30th of March 2026.

And maybe just as rare is this species? - Cornifrons ulceratalis - moth-trapping at CIMA, Tarifa, Cadiz Province, Andalucia, Spain on the 27th of March 2026. I have seen 140 of these over the last 14 years, but a record 128 of these arrived in spring 2025! At the moment there don't seem to be many migrant moths around. So, maybe the 3 that I have now seen in spring 2026 are in fact the offspring of last year's arrival?

And my second Cornifrons ulceratalis of the spring looking very fresh and great to see. However, the mix of moths on this night didn't suggest migrants moving through! So, the question is after a lot of this species arrived in spring 2025, could they have bred and this could perhaps be the offspring of those moths? - moth-trapping at Huerta Grande, Pelayo, Cadiz Province, Andalucia, Spain on the 22nd of March 2026.
