From way up here the earth looks very small,
They shouldn’t fight at all
Down there upon that little sphere.
Their time is short, a life is just a day,
You think they’d find a way.

"The right to safe, free, and joyful movement in the world": Dr. Destiny Thomas at the Bike Walk Roll Summit gives us a vision of what designing for the future we want (conference theme) must include, and a history lesson on trauma embedded in pavement.
The CPSC (Consumer Product Safety Commission) did a study from 2017-2023. They found 193 fatalities and 87,400 injuries related to ebikes.
In the same period, there were roughly 280,000 traffic fatalities and 15 million injuries on our roads.
But yeah, let's make more laws about bicycles. 1/

I love Amtrak Cascades! Just edited 30 pages of a document and drank my good coffee from home while heading to Seattle for the Safe Mobility Conference. I have my folding bike Tessa in the baggage car. Train+bike travel is the best! #trains #BicyclesChangeLives

Hoping to reach journalists/editors:
- When you're writing about legislation, whether proposed or enacted, include a link to official info page on the bill.
- When you're writing about research, include a link to the study.
Why? I'll read your work before a piece by someone who doesn't do this.
Additional note: Our whole team teleworks, with quarterly in-person all-staff meetings. We have one cluster in Olympia, another in Seattle, so it's also possible to see people in person at other times. 😆 You can live anywhere in the state and be on the team.

Great analysis but it's 13 years old. If you have links to more recent analysis on these lines it would be great to share those too.
You may ask yourself, "Where does that highway go to?"
And you may ask yourself, "Am I right, am I wrong?"
And you may say to yourself, "My God, what have I done?"

Really love this series of old transportation study covers @rmartincole.bsky.social shares in this thread. "The carless" have been with us forever--and yet we still haven't solved the problems of getting around without a vehicle. Maybe it's time we did that.
15 seconds of peace.
