A graduate of the École des Mines, Michel joined the center in the late 1960s and was its director from 1982 to 1994.

Qu'il s'agisse de l'organisation quotidienne d'un petit-déjeuner pour les migrants au nord de Paris, de savoir où marcher à Fukushima après le désastre, de décrire avec justesse l'expérience incertaine du toucher des ostéopathes, des décisions vitales et tâtonnantes à prendre en soins palliatifs, de la façon dont l'Europe définit des objets à la fois techniques et politiques, ou encore de la réalité plurielle d'un territoire comme les Murs à Pêches, à Montreuil, les textes sur ces problèmes très divers réunis dans ce livre, partagent une façon commune de les aborder, au ras du sol, au coeur de l'expérience en cours, les auteurs étant le plus souvent eux-mêmes partie prenante de l'action décrite. Dans le fil d'un renouveau de l'enquête pragmatiste, le collectif Attachements réunit depuis de longues années des chercheurs aux statuts divers, désireux de discuter ensemble de leurs travaux.
