The Earth and the Moon aren't the only interesting things in this photograph, taken 54 years ago today - April 20, 1972.
Apollo 16's Charlie Duke and John Young were in the Lunar Module when Charlie captured this wonderful shot. Ken Mattingly is in the other spacecraft seen orbiting the Moon.

It really does doesn't it? The Apollo astronauts described the surface as a tan colour, depending on the angle of the Sun, due to glass spherules on the surface reflecting their iron content

from the Earth to the Moon, and they have done a superb job of taking us all with them, through the lens of their cameras.

Christina Koch can be heard clicking away with the Nikon, capturing the breathtaking Earthset photographs already shared.

Victor Glover and Jeremy Hansen are viewing through another window. Such a privilege for the crew to make this incredible journey...more

Wait for it to focus...
Sound up...

Earthset, recorded by Reid Wiseman during the Artemis II lunar flyby.

The initial imperfect composition, and the phone hunting for focus makes this so much more human and familiar.

A celestial scene witnessed by only 28 of us in history...more

#OTD in 1970, the Apollo 13 crew got their first glimpse of the damage caused by the explosion that occurred 200,000 miles from Earth.
The recent Artemis II mission helps us comprehend the gravity of the situation. NASA got the crew home alive.

Here's my photographic analysis of the damage:

It's impossible to truly do it justice, but in searching other videos, I'd say the sound on this is very close to how I remember it, especially the moment it really hit. That pulsating, pounding, crackling sound. It's from just over 3 miles and as close as anyone could get.

Two weeks today, already.

The launch of Artemis II from near the VAB ๐Ÿš€ SOUND UP!

The nerves, the excitement, the joy, the promise of what was to come.

Who else would turn back the clock and relive the last two weeks?

(Possibly some debris at 14 second mark, bottom left?)

This was taken in the shadow of the Moon by the crew of Artemis II.
The Sun's light was blocked, revealing a sky bursting with stars and our own Milky Way.
A view of the universe rarely seen by human eyes.

Nikon Z9, 35mm lens, 10sec exposure.

Some of this new imagery is uncannily familiar.

Bottom image: representing the end of the Apollo program - Earthset on the final Apollo mission (Apollo 17).

Top image: representing the start of a new era - Earthrise on the first crewed Artemis mission (Artemis II).

Exactly - wish I would see this now on the IMAX, but being here in Florida is pretty good too!

No film unfortunately. I asked Christina Koch to push for it too. They were only going to have two Nikon D5s on board but the Nikon Z9 was a late addition thankfully. And I hear they've had it at the window already. This will be the lunar surface camera in future

As soon as this first, stunning crescent Earth photo landed from Artemis II yesterday, it reminded me of one of the finest Earth shots from project Apollo - taken during the uncrewed Apollo 4

The composition - two eras uniting, making one Earth sprang to mind - but can Artemis help unite the world?
