I’ve loved you every day of my fucking life since I was eleven years old. Can’t shut the fuck up about it. Have you turned the radio on lately?” Ed’s heart was a hummingbird guzzling rocket fuel. His heart was a firework, exploding glitter and stars in his chest. “Okay,” Stede said slowly. His gaze trailed down to Ed’s hand, where he still clutched the envelope of divorce papers.

He didn’t tear off the paper like a kid at Christmas. He worked at it with an art restorer’s fastidiousness, pulling the corners up, turning it over and unsticking the tape that held the last of the paper on the box. Ed took the paper and tossed it behind them, never taking his eyes off Stede as he looked at the gift that sat on his lap.

STEDE: AND I WOULD BE REMISS NOT TO MENTION THAT ANNE IS RESPONSIBLE FOR BRINGING MY FAVORITE PERSON INTO THE WORLD Ed sat up in his seat. What the fuck? Stede turned to look at him head on, eyes shining bright. What was happening? Stede had that look on his face—a look Ed had seen a million times before, a look he loved. Like he was about to do something fucking insane. Even now, after all this time, it electrified Ed to see it. Made him want to sit up in his chair. See what happened next. Made him wanted to go anywhere, do anything, as long as he was doing it with this absolute lunatic of a man. Stede smiled, just for him, like he could see all of that right there on Ed’s face. He took a deep breath. “Edward…” Ed braced himself. But Stede stopped there. He turned away from Ed, frowning as he scanned the rest of the crowd. No, seriously—what the fuck? Ed followed Stede’s gaze, searching for whatever had distracted him. And found it immediately. There was a man in the crowd. A man Ed didn’t recognize. He had his phone out, holding it up as though he were filming something, which was odd enough—Stede had posted approximately one billion increasingly passive aggressive signs asking people to leave their phones in their pockets, in order to preserve “theatrical verisimilitude”—but that wasn’t the only weird thing. He wasn’t filming Stede, the speech. He had his phone pointed towards Ed. And he wasn’t in costume.
