SZA says she feels like she's "at war because of AI" and criticises the technology for "disproportionately" impacting Black music SZA says she feels like she's "at war because of AI" and criticises the technology for "disproportionately" impacting Black music

this recent article detailing SZA's anti-AI positions gives a very clear description of the many ways in which AI-generated music, along with other AI-generated media, is anti-Black (if anyone is curious about that)

the same thing happened with recordings, and now generative AI is positioning itself as the technology driving a third wave of this same phenomenon - the only question now is whether audiences will go along with it and fully embrace the new technology (as happened with sheet music and recordings)

anti-Blackness, is of course the big driver for all of this; in the late 1800s, the music industry first emerged around a particular technology (sheet music) that allowed white creators and institutions to encode and commoditize sonic signifiers of Blackness (see: Matthew D. Morrison's 'Blacksound')

a big point in my teaching is that streaming aims to lower labor costs and dispossess the value of musical labor, algorithms flatten aesthetics (i.e. what @robinjames.bsky.social calls "chill"), to favor sounds/styles that are cheap to produce - AND all this continues the industry's historical goals

“Being an old lady in a heavy rock band feels even more ‘not the done thing’ than being a girl in a band felt in the 90s. I like that!” says singer Sam

I will forever stay mad that Sony refused to let them release a full album of Patty Griffin covers. This hits like a goddamn freight train, and I lost my entire mind when I saw this live on the MMXVI tour. #CountryRockSunday: www.youtube.com/watch?v=o_yg...
