Excited that our work on nature-based climate solutions and #NLP is being shared on #TheAcademicMinute on @npr.org — thanks to everyone who made this opportunity possible.

The data on the positive impacts of visiting, appreciating, and being near natural areas keeps rolling in!
Understand science funding cuts and their consequences … Economists have warned that cutting federal funding for scientific research could, in the long run, damage the U.S. economy by an amount equivalent to a major recession.

Led by the great and always enjoyable Johan Oldekop. This was a great group of co-authors dedicated to a critical topic!
And, good news, we have access to more and better social and environmental data than ever before!
These data and our framework can help build a robust evidence base of policies and processes that generate prosperous, fair, and ecologically effective forest restoration.
The framework we present advances forest transition theory by incorporating social outcomes and a wider set of ecological outcomes.
It is essential that forest #restoration works for people and the planet.
But, current theories don’t help recognize or realize sustainable forest transitions. 🌏 🌍 🌎

Excellent new paper maps potential future terrestrial ecosystems to 2050 based on projected climate, land cover change, and Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSPs): www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti... led by Roger Sayre (USGS) and colleagues Patrick Roehrdanz (CI) and Paul Elsen (WCS) among others
Exactly!
Should we be worried about climate change? Heck, yes. (But let’s make sure we get the facts right, and skip the most extreme doomer yarns — which aren’t based in science…)
Should that freeze us into inaction? Heck, no!
It should lead to agency and action!

Was looking for this starter pack! So very glad that @markandrachuk.bsky.social put it together. Looking forward to getting those tailored #consocsci posts and (especially) publication updates. No longer feeling nostalgic for Old Twitter, just pleased with New Bluesky!
This is great, thanks for putting it together! New to Bluesky over here—could you add me to the pack?
Evidence map for natural climate solutions and co-impacts to people and nature, ranging from more to less evidence with growth rates shown over each square.
The impacts of natural climate solutions: we analyzed millions of scientific studies for a comprehensive analysis of *what* evidence exists for NCS and impacts to people and nature. New work out in @naturesustain.bsky.social doi.org/10.1038/s418...

#NaturalClimateSolutions try to address global climate problems, but how do they impact local communities? We review what we know from >250 K articles in work with @harpactes.bsky.social, @jterbaugh.bsky.social, and many others (not yet here!) is just out in @naturesustain.bsky.social

This work is the product of a fantastic research team, including @harpactes.bsky.social, @berobinson.bsky.social, @teevrat.bsky.social, and many others not (yet!) on this site. Also, it wouldn't have been possible without support from @nature.org and @bezosearthfund.bsky.social!
There is so much more to do to better understand #NaturalClimateSolution and co-impacts! This piece provides an example of how large language models and machine learning can help us better understand pre-existing evidence. It also highlights where and what research on co-impacts is needed.
Similarly, certain co-impacts have much more research than others. Environmental and biodiversity outcomes, as well as economic outcomes, tend to be better studied. Meanwhile, human health, education, and cultural/spiritual benefits have comparatively little evidence.
Some #NaturalClimateSolution pathways have more evidence across all co-impact types, while others demonstrate very little. For example, forest-related pathways are very well studied. Meanwhile, coastal- and wetland-related pathways are not.
We screened ~2 M articles and assessed >250 K to map the evidence on #NaturalClimateSoltuions and co-impacts, like economic outcomes, biodiversity, and human health.
We track this evidence over time and space, allowing us to assess it for different co-impacts over time and across countries.
In our research (out today in @naturesustain.bsky.social), we provide a comprehensive evidence map for the co-impacts from #NaturalClimateSolutions using large language models (in addition to other interesting models!) to synthesize information from >250 K articles.

This week @dartmouthcollege.bsky.social, we began our last “Environment and Society” class with Wendell Berry. After, a student told me, ”I didn’t know I needed that.”
Leaving this here in case you might need it, too.
