And a level of distress tolerance for shame is vital to shame working as a means of societal behavior shaping.

You need to be able to sit with shame, and not immediately try to block it from happening in the first place, or escape it when it does.

Which is similar to the Harry Potter fan crashouts. They’re not being stopped from buying HP merch. What they can’t stand is knowing that you, a stranger, might feel disapproval or contempt for them because of it.

Trumpism, and people who crash out at being told maybe they should stop buying Harry Potter stuff, both seem, at their core, to be motivated by a lack of distress tolerance for shame.

Because they’re both crash outs at the idea that there might be social consequences for what you do and say.

Other people might not behave as you expect, they might disappoint you, they might challenge you, you can’t always be certain of their motivations, who knows?

Dealing with other humans requires sitting with uncertainty. With lack of control.

So a big reason the executive class is so high on generative AI, not even specifically at work but in their personal lives, wanting to talk to it a lot, wanting to use it for everything, is a lack of distress tolerance for the messy business of dealing with other autonomous humans.

Oh hey, I am once again going to talk about lack of distress tolerance, specifically for shame, and how it ties together AI, the “male loneliness epidemic,” Trumpism, and yes, people’s indignation that anyone might think they’re a bad person for continuing to buy Harry Potter merch.
