Something that’s become a real issue for archives (provincial and federal) in Canada is bot crawling. Bot crawling used to train AI puts so much pressure on servers, to the point that pages and documents will fail to load for actual researchers. So frustrating!

What Tim Houston really said was that the arts matter less than military and industrial capital expenditure because Trump. Lest we forget the record tourism numbers of last year for the exact same reason, I guess.

Currently, I am migrating content listed on the former site. But I welcome suggestions for future additions that are open and accessible (i.e not stuck behind a paywall).
There are many excellent digital history projects, databases, online encyclopedias, and more that are often tricky to find; buried in university library websites. ADS can be a bridge to these tools that are vital in how we mobilize knowledge and resources in Atlantic Canada Studies
Today I reactivated Atlantic Digital Scholarship, a project I began with Elizabeth Mancke in 2019 to support building research and community networks. I’m excited to bring the platform back, and to add new tools and databases including my ongoing work transcribing Saint John customs records!
On the blog we share an open letter from the board of the Nova Scotia Women's History Society re. the decision of the NS government to close 12 of 28 provincial museum sites:
Event - On the Outside, Looking Out: Canada’s Rural Communities as Stewards of Landscape and the Land
March 11

Great short essay. I’ve been working on a transcription project for the Port of Saint John customs house, so seeing many parallels with NS. In 1788, 55 of the 88 non-British ships that sold cargo in SJ were from the US - all carrying foodstuffs.
100%! What’s happening in high ed. is the same as in health care. Provincial governments are forcing the system to collapse to make privatization palatable.
Privatizing Mt. A would be a tragedy. I’ve heard the idea of merging STU and UNB for years in Freddy, and I could be convinced if it meant improving access to education and programs but the Holt government’s plan will invariably lead to worse access and fewer programs.
Also, pretty sure AI hasn’t figured out how to pull a 20cm container in an archives yet.

Between the NS Government closing certain museum locations for the sake of “modernization,” and the NB government considering significant reductions to support of heritage and tourism as part of its ongoing budget review - it’s been a rough month for Atlantic Canadian history!
The CHA's annual meeting program is now online! We are so excited, and hope to see you in Charlottetown in June. Stay tuned - registration opens next week. #cdnhist
Excellent! I recently re-read your piece on Caribbean trade and Loyalist Nova Scotia RNSHS Journal for a little project I’m doing on Saint John. Such a great article!
I’m shocked that the organizers are not more responsive to the concerns that many have about entering the US and are only offering a limited opportunity for hybrid attendance. “Building Bridges,” sure, but cross at your own risk…
Pleased to share that digitized copies of The Officers' Quarters are now available online. The OQ served as the official publication of the Fredericton Region Museum from 1985 to 2025, and offers short essays documenting the history of the city, region, and museum!

Historians that create personal database projects using only URL links to archival repositories and their online materials… import the reference information too. Internet URLs are not forever… Software becomes obsolete.
Lovely walk along the Nashwaak today with @richrray.bsky.social, fall colours are really coming in spectacularly.
