So much of our language reflects
the common βcar firstβ bias around our streets, & we should never forget that much of that language was the result of deliberate campaigns to specifically re-write our perspective of streets as βfor cars only.β This is one of the more subtle, but important, examples.
A poster with a colorful stack of books on the left and this text on the right: βHey, Teenagers: Pay close attention to the books people try to ban. Then, make a beeline to read those books, if you can. Find out for yourself why those people want that book banned. Find out for yourself if they can be trusted to know whatβs best for you.β ~ Jeff Zentner

Sounds like my neighborhood on that topic. *sigh*
To put it another way, if you fill up a totally-empty gas guzzler with a 16-gallon tank in Chicago, the state sales tax on gas comes out to almost exactly the cost of a single round-trip on a CTA bus. Which of those two options should we be financially incentivizing during a gas price shock?
I'm sorry. It's so hard to lose a sweet fuzzbaby. :(

Screenshot of a Substack note by account 'JoJoFromJerz' that says: 'In a sane administration, the FBI Director doesnβt go on the morning news to prove heβs not a drunk, the Defense Secretary doesnβt quote Tarantino to prove heβs a man of God, and the President doesnβt take multiple cognitive exams to prove heβs not insane.'
None of this is normal.

A few years ago a WA state friend (west of Seattle) who owns a Chevy Bolt drove to Chicago and WI, visited a while and drove back. He's very happy with his car. Back then he had to make some longer stops due to limited availability of compatible chargers but it worked out.
When they're really buried in their screens, I wave (whether I'm standing on the corner, riding my bike, etc.). That little bit of movement often works to get their attention.
On the rare occasion when I need a car rental, I almost always want a sedan, preferably something on the small side.
Will be curious to hear how it works out for you.
We also have lots of kids on our street. When I am doing gardening work outside, I regularly step to the curb and give speeding drivers the death stare. My goal is to get them to slow down and stop at our 4-way stop intersection. It usually works.
