Light-heartedness and humour should be used to keep the tone level and let the emotional moments hit harder when they come. Not to diffuse those emotional moments.

One of my favourite character tropes: funnyman who has built flippant walls around their trauma and watching those walls collapse.

FF7 had a lot of silly little minigames, sure. But they were the definition of optional side content. Not tied to game completition, achievements, anything. No sense of completionist obligation.
