By the way, your book is really useful during revision!

Yeah, maybe. The solution uses inverses matrices and some nifty algebra to get the equation of the ellipse. It doesn’t look that hard but it isn’t something I have taught the students.

It’s an ellipse

Just checking, if anyone who does Edexcel Further #ALevelMaths could confirm: am I right in thinking that this question is not on the Core Pure syllabus? It came from madasmaths.

@hcsstweets.bsky.social With Wrexham losing, I reckon City qualify for the play-offs if they win 3 of their last 4 games. And probably, as several top teams play each other, they can fall a little short of that.

@tommctague.bsky.social Great editor’s note (as always the article I look forward to most) but for one thing. Durham is lovely but not God’s own country, which is very much Yorkshire.

I’m in love with these photos by Misan Harriman at a free exhibition at Hope 93 (on Eastcastle Street just behind Oxford Street).

It’s funny that more of my students know where Beijing and Jacksonville are than Scotland or Cornwall

It’s usually only a mark here and a mark there, so maybe we don’t give enough attention to such answers.
Students who write essays on their other subjects seem extraordinarily reluctant to write a proper sentence in maths. Maybe that’s my fault?

In #MathsToday I am marking #ALevelMaths mock Stats papers and getting depressed. Students seem incapable of giving contextual replies in plain English.

I am going to pinch this and add in a question where the head of maths enters the whole year group, so we can use a normal approximation. Thanks Rob.

I have a savings account, like a bond, where the annual interest is paid into my current account, so the principal doesn’t grow. That’s simple interest isn’t it? (Maybe also a bad investment, but that’s another story)

He will be happier on the long run if Arsenal fail to win the PL. Otherwise he may have unrealistically high expectations.

Confirmed by email just now from Christ’s. The main Cambridge website will be updated later.

Christ’s say “This will apply to students applying later this year for 2027 entry. The University website is not yet updated, as it still contains the information for 2026 entry applicants. The Undergraduate Study webpages only get updated in the spring (March/April).”
