I am excited to announce our new book, which pulls together all of different threads of what great schools do & celebrating them.
We've explored curriculum, learning, behaviour, attendance, personal development, & leadership. I'm forever indebted to all schools I've visited & worked with.

Q&A: How much do principals impact student outcomes?
"When we think about managing resources strategically, we often don’t think enough about time—but it’s one of the most important resources we have."

More than one-third of primary schools and four in 10 secondaries are expecting to reduce their numbers of staff next year, amid falling pupil numbers and tightening budgets buff.ly/NOoE7J4
In the 20+ years that I have been teaching biology I have come across many texts that purport to transform classroom practice and improve student outcomes. However, rarely have I been so convinced by the power of a new theoretical underpinning for a pedagogical technique such as the one presented here. Moore-Anderson provides detailed discussions of systems theory, cybernetics and variation theory and their relevance to the biology classroom. Alongside the explanations, he provides concrete examples grounded in the classroom and over 40 diagrams that can be used to teach key topics. The book starts with explanations of the underpinning theories he has applied to his teaching. This can, at times, be heavy going, and although the ‘key ideas’ are highlighted it can feel like there is a lot of information to absorb. However, as the book continues the scaffolding becomes clear and the reader can see how these ideas build towards coherent classroom strategies. It may be tempting to skip the theory at the beginning of the book and jump to using the diagrams in lessons; however, to be most effective it is important to understand the ‘why’ and the ‘how’ behind these. Although this book is specifically about teaching biology, there are ideas that are relevant to teaching all science disciplines and it may have benefited from a collation of the ‘key ideas’ and ‘assumptions’ presented as they apply to teaching and learning of all sciences or all classroom settings. Overall, Moore-Anderson presents a well-reasoned and compelling argument for the application of cybernetics and variation theory to the classroom. This is not an easy read, but, in my opinion, it is a thought-provoking read and a book that biology teachers should invest time in, to consider the theories, key ideas and diagrams, and how they could apply these in their own classroom. 'Teaching is about responding to the emergent thinking in front of us'.
This is an excellent post, making a powerful argument for why teaching resources 'need to be dynamic, interrogative'.

Really excited to be at the CST conference with @inspireeducation.bsky.social
Every year, around a third of GCSE pupils in England miss out on passes in English and maths. We spoke to some of the school that are quietly turning things around for the 'forgotten third'...
This idea was inspired by the work of
@earlyexcellence.bsky.social recently shared at their Inspiring Leaders Conference.
We're eager to see how these bags will enrich learning experiences and strengthen the home-school connection. Off to go and make more now! 😊

Two core ideas underpin effective inclusive teaching:
1. Cognitive similarity
2. Instructional sensitivity
Let’s dig into both…
↓
Managing your attention & working memory so you can actively think &cognate is the single most important thing you can do/ get your students explicitly aware of so they can manage &own their learning- particularly as we move into exam season @walkthrus.bsky.social @olicav.bsky.social
The benefits of instructional coaching & building a coaching culture can totally empower teachers in a personal, pedagogical &ultimately classroom impact way.
So proud to be an accredited @walkthrus.bsky.social to mobilise this within schools @olicav.bsky.social @mattteachcoach.bsky.social
Excited to be attending and speaking at this event on Saturday 😊
