For the first time, today I modelled the Earth using a scotch egg, and ketchup. An apple was used as a competitive model. Has been dubious, but they led to some great discussions about their validity.

Blue morpho butterfly with wings open showing the blue colour.
On a school trip to the zoo today and was pleased that I managed to get a nice photo of the structural colour of the morpho butterfly.

Montage of four book front covers, from left to right: Making Number Talks Matter, Invisible Women, Mathematical Mindsets, The Number Devil
We calculated it was high time we added to our book recommendations, so this month we’ve factored in four maths-related titles:
• 2 for teaching
• 1 for younger readers
• 1 for data lovers

A diagram of the heart and a stock and flow diagram showing the causes of the flows of blood through the heart.
Today's model of the heart came out really nicely with Year 10. I dream of a day that biology teachers share their models rather than slides.

Having told my Y11 class about having a strawberry Frube taken off me by a school bully, two of them bought me a box of strawberry Frubes today. They’re too cute (gigantic 16 year old lads) 😭😭😭

Illustration of a woman teacher sat at a desk, marking papers. Behind her on the wall is a periodic table. On the desk are clamp stands, flasks and test tubes, some containing coloured liquids
Marking exams – great for your CPD and great for your learners’ outcomes. Find out how in this article by chemistry teacher Becky Kell from @boltonsch.bsky.social

Delivered my first INSET CPD to my new department today regarding embedding vocabulary in our lessons. It landed well and I’m looking forward to seeing how the work we did today works in the classroom over the course of the week.

Hello to science teachers with long memories. Who remembers using Science in Society AS or A level units for extension with Y9? I can't find anything about that online any more. Did any of you do it? Which units?
Inspired by @harvard.edu natural sciences lecture demonstrations video which shows a projected absorption spectrum of sodium I created this version with an extension to then project the emission spectrum. I hope you like it.

This is exactly how we treat Year 7.
The trouble is with curriculum. Many Year 7 science courses begin with "design an experiment", then just learn "content".
Instead, we focus on metacontent: building, inferring from, and developing an explanation, from models.

When teaching about celestial bodies to Y7, I got hijacked by a question.
“Is Santa’s reindeer, Comet, called Comet because of comets in the Universe?”
As the lesson headed South, I joined them in the discussion of the existence of Santa. The bar graphs that we should’ve done will wait 🫣
