"There's a meaning to you, and most times it's better that we don't know what it is we don't know..." With a line like that, I thought...oh, yes. This is good stuff. And this book of poems by Norb Aiken IS just that...good stuff! Good stuff because it's an intricate weaving of words that seem so simple and uncomplicated in their delivery but are, really, so very powerful and so very deep. And human. Painfully, joyfully, dark and light, human. "...wanting to be home when I'm home, and the unsettling after I've settled." See? Thoughts like that. Thoughts that most of us can read and we know exactly what they mean because Aiken has this wonderful talent of speaking what we feel--feelings that we just can't express as easily as he can. To me, that's the gift of a true wordsmith...the ability to say even the most confusing, troubling, happy thoughts we have in such a pure, "I get this" way. Reviewing a book of poetry is harder than reviewing a story. No plot, no main characters...just this awesome basket of hundreds of thoughts and moods. Well, I take that back. There IS a main character. It's the READER. It's about US. Aiken's voice is a mix of Jack Kerouac, Langston Hughes, Bob Dylan and Paul Simon. Fun, serious, sometimes it rhymes, sometimes it does not. Lyrical and lilting sometimes, sometimes a call to awareness like a wake-up punch in the gut.

How do you describe a book that takes your heart and mind on a journey you will never forget? This book was written in 2023. It is more relevant to our world today than it was then. You cannot help but feel the pain in some of his poems. I call his words prophetic. His question to all of us is, do we create our own world or live in the one created for us? As things stand in the world right now, that is a question we must all ask ourselves, and what we will do about it. Aikin's poems are not something to be rushed through; take your time, let the meaning sink in, and feel the truth of his words. I read this book for the first time in 2024, the next time was this past weekend, a time for reflection, and he touched my heart and mind. Thank you, Mr Aikin.
