It's exhausting. I'm exhausted. And this tech has taken a wrecking ball to our industry and it feels like nobody cares.

Joy Was Never Yours to Have

Joy Was Never Yours to Have

Dear White Folx,

"Nothing in whiteness teaches you about joy, pleasure, play, and passion that isn't about control, entitlement, or competition. You don't know joy just to be joyful."

I said this on the Yell Fire! podcast recently and I want to sit with it here because it names something...

Yup. It would be nice if we could fund things that are good for Canadians just because they're good for Canadians, and without expecting them to turn a profit. We have become a self-destructive society that has swallowed the lie that everything in life must be profitized in order to be of value.

👏 Canada 👏 Post 👏 is 👏 a 👏 public 👏 service 👏

Nothing proves how capitalism has brain rotted everyone than thinking the post office, hospitals, public transit, libraries, etc. need to turn a profit to be worthwhile.

The future of electricity is wind and solar, new report says. Canada is lagging is behind | CBC News Renewable energy met all new demand for electricity in 2025, according to a new review of global power generation, preventing any increase in the burning of fossil fuels to produce electricity and hig...

So, by 2035 our solar will double… to where our "peer countries" are right now. It is ridiculous that we are not a global leader in renewables. We had our chance. Provincial politicians like Ford & Smith stopped it & dragged us backward. Carney's LNG push isn't helping.

Public health's cost-benefit model for COVID vaccines in Canada 👉forgot to include the fact that you can get #longCOVID without seeking medical care for the acute COVID👈, so it assumes *total* annual COVID incidence is 7.5%.

This is why it's not covered.

These are not remotely serious people.

We now have one author from Yukon (hurray!) but we still have no one signed up from either #Nunavut or the #NorthwestTerritories. If you know any authors from either territory, please let them know we'd LOVE to have them involved! #NU #NT #Canada

The currently escalating tech backlash must be put in the context of:

“people have been listening to the most insufferable techbros in the world gleefully threaten everyone else with mass unemployment for over 6 years, and they’re sick of their shit”

Are you in NB??? SIGN UP FOR FICTION FEST, DAMN IT!!! 😂

(Seriously... no one has signed up from New Brunswick yet, and I *really* want to get at least one author from every province and territory involved!)

I do not have to choose the ways & tech of the oppressor to avoid obsolescence.

See also Ontario. We need to fight this authoritarian creep into Canadian provincial politics.

If you know any authors in #NewBrunswick, please them know that Fiction Fest is still hoping to get at least one author from that province involved in the summer showcase! So far, there are none from #NB. #WritingCommunity #writing

Omg this is a depressing thread. Why haven't governments done something about this?

16 hours ago 4 2 1 0

And yet governments keep making it harder for people to get COVID vaccines. Make it make sense.

Ford wants to mark kids on attendance and introduce standardized exams, even though we *know* the problem is something else (plus the mental health crisis).

Just a thought: How about we stop shaming the poor for buying things that may not be essential, and start shaming the rich for making a profit off things that are essential?

How long did that take? I can't even imagine my cat doing that. She basically just rotates from one nap spot to another all day long. 😂

There are still two weeks left in the sign up period if any of your authors want to join Fiction Fest! :) Check out the Author FAQ at FictionFest.ca for more info.

Its not a hot take but man the way the word "content" is used these days. A vile bit of late stage capitalist propaganda, lumping all forms of human creativity and expression into a single wastebin teaching the public to treat all art as disposable.

#WritingCommunity fam, I am so tired. Every time I start to feel like maybe I'm starting to get some kind of solid foundation from which I might be able to build some kind of traction, there's some insane industry shakeup that knocks it all down again. 😣

Thinking maybe I should just try and recreate my own Books2Read-style pages for each of my books on my website, just in case. Looks like D2D actually owns them now, so I'm guessing that dropping D2D will result in loss of Books2Read access, too. 🫠

It's not that I don't sympathize with auto, steel, and lumber industry workers. But they are *always* getting bailouts and "concern" from the government. Those industries are getting squeezed by tariffs, yes. But our creative industries are being *decimated* by gAI. And nobody seems to care at all.

Anyone know if it's possible to fix an old-school battery-operated digital camera? There must be some small business somewhere that does that, right? 😑

I am seriously ready to ditch all modern tech out the gd window at this point.

What Ontarians need to know about ‘student achievement’ reforms that will run school boards like businesses All students and families will be impacted by cuts and provincial reforms being imposed on Ontario schools, and those who are already disadvantaged will bear the brunt.

“Once we view education through the lens of a balance sheet, we have already decided that some students are too expensive to serve.”

Does anyone know if delisting books from D2D means we lose access to our Books2Read links, too? #WritingCommunity

‘Pandora’s box’: Danielle Smith and insurance giants unleash attack on healthcare ⋆ The Breach Danielle Smith is working hand-in-glove with private insurers to push health privatization in Alberta—and it could spread across Canada

I am just so tired of living in a world where a handful of evil politicians get to destroy things that benefit everyone, that took generations and cost lives to build. These politicians need to be ousted and the corporations they're working with need to be destroyed.

This. They're moving toward antivirals that kill multiple viruses with mRNA. Cancer cures. And they don't have to poison my neighbors to do any of that.

Two hooded figures with lamps approach a moonlit, isolated cottage.
A woman answers the door.
We have come for the child, says the hooded figure
So soon? she asks
It is time, says the hooded figure.
The woman is distraught. We should never have got him a library card!
What is done cannot be undone, says the hooded figure
We couldn’t see the harm! We just wanted him to enjoy reading!
For most, it ends there, says the hooded figure, turning away and walking into the wilderness
Oh lord, What have I done! says the woman,
the child walks past her and out into the darkness with them.
Do not cry mother.
I am a writer now.

I am not interested in being a person on Instagram, doing collaborative posts with people or filming myself talking to the camera. I want to be a person who fucks off away from the noise and works hard and writes better and better books for the rest of his life and then dies. Why is that not ok?
