From abstract nonsense to essential tool Pure mathematics has a habit of eventually becoming useful. This series of articles explores an example: the rise of category theory in physics and the quest to build quantum computers.

Turns out that category theory, once described as "abstract nonsense" is just what we need to understand materials we might be able to build #quantum #computers with. We've told the story here plus.maths.org/abstract-non...

I've just started reading this new book by Shekhar Khare, a renowned number theorist at UCLA, and I highly recommend it. It takes the reader on an intellectual adventure, with very illuminating analogies and vivid storytelling. It's a book about some brilliant math, but it also has a great heart.
