Can Rules in Games Help Us Find Deeper Freedom? Podcast Episode · Pop and Play · April 14 · 44m

Appreciated this episode featuring @add-hawk.bsky.social in conversation with Pop and Play co-hosts @haenyyoon.bsky.social & @snowdaylearninglab.org

A fave bit: profs who (unironically) assign Foucault & then set up heavily surveilled test environments 😆

The report, by the way, was part of a treasure trove of archival documents from the The People's Institute that are preserved in the #NYPL archives.

The report, and esp these images, served to galvanize public support to stem the tide of censorship. Would they work today?

To illustrate the absurdity of movie censorship, cartoonists make the ridiculous comparison to censoring reading materials -- in other words, "who in their right mind would censor texts?!"

Censorship of motion pictures was enough of a concern in the early 1900s that The People's Institute issued a report, The Menace of Motion Picture Censorship, containing pointed political cartoons that serve as a rallying cry against censorship and aims to appeal to readers' sense of logic.

Goldfinches by Mary Oliver: 9780593692417 | PenguinRandomHouse.com: Books Caldecott Honoree Melissa Sweet gorgeously illustrates the work of Pulitzer Prize–winning poet Mary Oliver for the first time in picture book form. Have you heard them singing in the wind, above...

I recently picked up this book, an illustrated treatment of Mary Oliver's poem, "Goldfinches" -- the layered visuals are stunning, begging multiple revisits. A picture book, ages: all.

A refreshing critique of Haidt's oft-cited tome that refers to an entire generation of youth as the anxious recipients of unregulated access to smartphones.

"We’re not “anxious” just because of TikTok. Sometimes, the world is just objectively overwhelming — phones or not."

Learning requires friction. Good learning environments reduce unproductive friction. They also provide support so learners can work through productive friction. Using AI to remove all friction removes the learner from what is to be learned. Doing difficult things is entirely the point!

and if forced to choose something from this century... robyn's 'dancing on my own' is a sure bet. you can't not bop to it. just try resisting its infectious beat and deeply human lyrics.

nirvana's unplugged album is a winner every time i listen to it.
zenyatta mondata will never disappoint.
i could listen to tracy chapman read the phone book, but i'll settle for a repeat listen of her titular album.

first stanza lyrics from mmmbop by hanson

there's a version of mmmbop 25 years later that's slowed down slightly and that downshift makes the lyrics seem poignant somehow, in a way that eluded many of us when it was just a 'bop'

i like this nod to the materiality that provides access into different registers of play and the unfettered nature of experimentation that less about a preset goal & more about the temporal urgency to play now. even -- especially -- when there may be forces pulling in other directions.

not quite teen, and was into music before this, but i remember madonna's 'true blue' vinyl 45 being quite a get. we all crowded around my jack and jill (was that a thing?) record player, removed my large lp of the 6 million dollar man, & watched the little blue disc go round 'n round
