Why is it people are so quick to judge the simplest machine as capable of any computation (Turing completeness) yet so insistent that animals are incapable of entire categories of thought?

(Not a Galápagos tortoise). This is an Aldabra giant tortoise (Aldabrachelys gigantea) at a zoo in Japan. Their shell is smooth and dome shaped. Galápagos tortoises by contrast can have a saddleback shell and an extra-long neck, though some also have dome shells too (they are morphologically diverse, varying between islands). The Aldabra and Galápagos tortoises are approximately as different from each other as cats are from dogs, each going their separate ways about 50 million years ago.

The Galapagos tortoise is critically endangered.

The Aldabra tortoise's threat of extinction is less immediate but the two other giant tortoise species of the same genus did not survive human cohabitation.

Galapagos tortoises aren't named for the Galapagos Islands. The Galapagos Islands get their name from the galápagos (giant tortoises). #TodayILearned #TIL

"A kind of SF detective story, starring the curious combination of three scientists, a cop, and a pair of friendly killer whales." I wrote about Cachlot (1980), one of my favourite Alan Dean Foster novels so far, in 2022.

The ngolak / Baudin's black cockatoo is a striking icon of WA's jarrah forests and the south-west.

When they fly overhead, they'll often be observed in flocks. But the population of these stunning birds is in a critical decline, and they are now listed as endangered.

Knight's Graph Visualization of possible knight moves on a chess board

No deeper point to this, just an experiment in data visualization and information design for sake of curiosity.

With a 3D graph layout, it feels like you get a hint of some deeper underlying structure, but largely it just makes a lovely mess of it.

If a chessboard's tiles are jumbled, can a tool help rediscover the underlying structure using only the motion of the knight?

I found the fCoSE graph layout algorithm stood out from the rest, published just 4 years ago.

For noveling month, I'd always spend too much time coming up with a ridiculous book concept and then spend November writing something completely different. Here's the earliest I can find

Going to have to back these up before the site goes down for good. RIP nanowrimo dot org 🪦

So i won't be able to let you pull your currently playing song name directly from of your media player's memory using this neat little .net library. I mean I could but it'll make my software look like a trojan. Fortunately there's very few music apps where this approach would be needed or helpful.

Screenshot of a Microsoft security alert for memory.dll, from the nuget package found at https://github.com/erfg12/memory.dll/ which is a package that I guess is also used by malware

I briefly considered letting you pull your currently playing song directly out from of your music player's memory. But this approach was too hacky, difficult, generally unnecessary for most music apps, and now I've found the library to do it also triggers alerts
