Mississippi libraries immediately sounding the alarm about what IMLS cuts are going to do.
Lots of public libraries (& museums) are doing this. Keep it up! Expand it!

CALL YOUR REPS
As someone who once held an IMLS funded position, who is married to someone who also had an IMLS supported position, and I work with lots of people who were delighted to hear that collections=data and thus IMLS is a good thing to know about, this stinks.
Me
Cutting Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security will result in people dying.
Cutting medical research and funding will result in people dying.
Cutting foreign aid, FEMA and NOAA will result in people dying.
A few cars on fire is considered violence, but somehow the rest isn’t.
They're going to kill Libby and all your other library book reading apps, programs funded by Congress which the administration (and certainly not Elon or his teen Nazi psychopath goons) has no power to shut down.
Maybe a day to call all your reps again and to demand action
1/ Why does it matter if IMLS is defunded? Won’t states just step in to fund libraries & museums?
No. States have cut library & museum funding for years, forcing communities to rely on IMLS grants to survive. If IMLS disappears, so do essential services. 🧵👇 #SaveIMLS

“Libraries translate .003% of the federal budget into programs and services used by more than 1.2 BILLION people each year.”

“Transitioning” from 50 straight months of job growth, a 400% rise in manufacturing construction and the best back-to-back years for the stock market in a quarter century. 🤡
FACT: Social Security benefits STOP at age 115 as safeguards against fraud. While few people live past 115, legitimate beneficiaries can restart benefits if they prove they're still living.
Donald Trump & Elon Musk ARE LIARS & TRYING TO UNDERMINE THE CONFIDENCE IN OUR MONEY, OUR SOCIAL SECURITY. 😡🤬
This is why representation is so important! Books like this show disabled parenting in an authentic and wholesome way. I can’t wait to read this book with my son!

A meme picture from Gilmore girls that labels two women close together, hiding from another woman. The two women are labeled "me" and "new books" while the one woman is labeled "unread books on my shelf"
Disability is the only minority group you can join at any time. No one asks for it or expects it, it just happens
It’s not a moral failing. You didn’t “deserve” it. Most people will experience disability at some point in their lives
So why do we treat disabled people so badly? 🧵

Look up and see resisters.

My TBR is too long and evolving to ever run out of books.

Let people rest.
Let people ask for help.
Let people read what they want.
Let people choose what to help with.
Let people have limitations.
Calmly explain and let people decide for themselves.
The world is on fire, and there's urgency to put it out. But anger is burning up all the wrong people.
59% of banned books were children’s books featuring diverse characters or nonfiction books about historical figures, according to a new study. Authors of color wrote 39% of the books even though authors of color make up just 10% of U.S. authors #Booksky #BlackSky
I'm not sure how to succinctly explain the importance of librarians for research/advancements. Librarians in academic/research libraries manage physical/electronic collections that faculty/researchers need. Librarians also locate difficult to find articles/resources (think interlibrary loan).
Library tip: need a place to study? To hang out? To rest? Visit your local library. Libraries are one of the few true third spaces left where you aren't expected to spend money while there. Enjoy some quiet time surrounded by books and community. #booksky 📚💙 #libsky

I've been seeing a lot of posts about readers trying to curb their own book buying. Let me remind you of the library. Libraries can use your support now more than ever. When you checkout library books this lets funding authorities know the library is worthy of taxpayer money. 1/3
