Republican politicians who think that Minneapolis is a political problem are missing the point. It is a moral problem. But they are in so deep that they cannot see just how morally bankrupt they have become. They do not understand that we are as revulsed by their complicity as by Trump's cruelty.

Pope urges news agencies to stand as bulwark against lies, manipulation and post-truths Pope Leo XIV has encouraged international news agencies to stand firm as a bulwark against the “ancient art of lying” and manipulation.

“With your patient and rigorous work, you can act as a barrier against those who, through the ancient art of lying, seek to create divisions in order to rule by dividing,” he said. “You can be a bulwark of civility against the quicksand of approximation and post-truth...”

This Good Friday reflection, “For You Were Once…” tells a piece of my family’s story as Chinese Americans during the Exclusion Era. It is a story about silence, memory, and what it means to carry fear across generations.

My wife uncovered a trove of my childhood photos. I will post more later, but let this nightmare fuel Easter bunny sink in. Really sink in.
I’m still scared of clowns, mall Santas, and team mascots. No wonder.

Absolutely savage sign from the #HandsOff protest in Austin yesterday. There is no greater Texas insult.

Trump isn’t defending religious communities — he’s waging war on them (RNS) — The Trump administration is already the most harmful to religious freedom in modern American history.

OPINION: Trump’s administration has, in shocking fashion, marshaled government resources and used their bully pulpit to attack individual faith leaders and major religious institutions.

But its relevance to immigration policy remained open to debate until the Supreme Court decided the case of Wong Kim Ark in
1898. At the time, Chinese immigrants were explicitly banned from becoming American citizens. But when asked if a man born to Chinese immigrants in California could claim citizenship, the Supreme Court ruled he could — because he was born on American soil.
To decide otherwise, Justice Horace Gray noted in the majority opinion, "would be to deny citizenship to thousands of persons of English, Scotch, Irish, German or other European parentage, who have always been considered and treated as citizens of the United States."

The right of those born on US soil to citizenship were affirmed by the 1898 Supreme Court battle of Wong Kim Ark—a Chinese American born here during this nation’s decades of anti-Chinese exclusion—to be recognized as a citizen.

Trump seeks to destroy Wong’s legacy.

How an American-born Chinese man ensured birthright citizenship in the U.S. Wong Kim Ark was born around 1870 in San Francisco’s Chinatown. After moving back to China, he hoped to return, but was barred by the Chinese Exclusion Act; the U.S. did not consider him a citizen. The legal case that followed ensured that the 14th Amendment – birthright citizenship – was guaranteed for anyone born on U.S. soil.

Wong Kim Ark was born in San Francisco to Chinese Parents. In his 20s, he was denied re-entry to the U.S. on the basis of the Chinese Exclusion Act. His legal case set the precedent for birthright citizenship, something Donald Trump has pledged to attack when in office. #Velshi

Jimmy Carter was right about climate change. He was right about the Mideast conflict and apartheid in Israel and South Africa and the ongoing plagues of poverty and racism. It was he not Reagan who freed our hostages in Iran. A true man of God, he died beloved, which not many presidents do or will.

Project 2025 is apparently going to start by taking us back to the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act.

Painting of a sitting black cat and an orange word bubble that says ‘no’

I forgot I painted this. Make what you will of it; cats say ‘No’ to many things they don’t agree with.

Gouache (I think) and color pencil
