An Assembly committee advanced two measures designed to reduce NJ's prison population by reforming parole processes and giving elderly inmates a chance at early release. But with less than a week in the legislation session, it’s unclear whether the bills will make it to Gov. Murphy’s desk in time.

NEW: The Trump Admin has admitted they must comply with yesterday’s court order and issue full SNAP benefits for November.

Recipients should confirm balances and monitor NJSNAP.gov. We’ll continue fighting to protect NJ residents and make sure they don’t go hungry.

Phone Calls Are a Lifeline in Prison, But They Are Expensive A recent decision from the FCC will keep jail and prison phone calls more costly for at least the next couple years.

Last week, the Federal Communications Commission voted to increase phone and video calling rate caps for incarcerated people.

In July we published dispatches about the necessity of phone calls, and how high costs — relative to extremely low prison wages — affect their connections to loved ones.

Opening the Window I opened the window inside a California Institution for Women (CIW) cell. Suddenly, before I could focus on the sights, I was...

"I keep gazing out of my window like the daydreamer I am, just to detach from my trapped reality of this cell. To hope. To imagine.

I pretend I crawl out of the window into the loving arms of a community filled with opportunity and purpose."

As Told To: Nearly 50 of My Relatives Have Been Incarcerated Incarceration has extinguished civic responsibility for many in my family. They don't have faith that their vote would make a difference.

There’s an open secret in my family. Everybody whispers about it, but no one talks about it.

It’s about my family’s history of intergenerational incarceration.

In Prison, Drawing Helped Me Heal After My Dad’s Car Crash The only thing that could calm my racing mind was the sound of a graphite stick on sandpaper, the numbing task of creating and shading.

In prison, Charles drew through the pain of not knowing whether his father would recover after a car accident. His efforts led to a portrait of his dad's favorite artist.
