If he truly loves Wei Ying, the right thing to do would be to break it off. To make him leave. Not cruelly, not gradually, pushing and pushing and trying to find out when he breaks. Wei Ying is better, stronger, kinder than Lan Zhan could ever imagine. He might never break. It’s Lan Zhan who has to make that decision. He wonders about his mother. Trapped in a marriage with a man who didn’t love her, wilting slowly until nothing was left of her. Why didn’t she leave? What was so special about his father, anyway?

He can’t remember. The problem is that he cannot remember, that other than her sadness that is engraved into his heart, lacerations that will never stop bleeding, the rest of it is blurry.
