The words recited were the same as when Lan Xichen had gone through it, but Lan Wangji felt a different weight to them now, as they were accompanied by the responsibility of leadership and, perhaps, salvation. It was now Lan Wangji, and not the rules, that had to shoulder the weight of morality for an entire sect.

Yes, this outcome was highly unexpected, but since it had always been a possibility, until his presentation proved otherwise, Lan Wangji had always kept the idea of such a future in the back of his mind. Truthfully, that future sometimes held the guise of a fantasy, especially during and after the war, when the luster of being clan-born and gentry had been scraped away and all that was left was hypocrisy and disillusionment. His brother was worried about his freedom. From his brother’s perspective, his presentation had all but shackled him to the Cloud Recesses and the sect for the foreseeable future. But with the supposed shackles also came power, which he’d never sought but which could now make that fantasy a reality.
I need motivation. I keep thinking about this #wip, but I then keep not writing it, even though I really think the idea is fun and unique. Ah, well.
