David Greybeard, a wild chimpanzee, gets a handout of bananas from author Goodall, who studies the apes under a National Geographic Society grant. This scene near
her camp represents a triumph for Miss Goodall; at first the animals fled if she came
within 500 yards. Knapsack holds camera and notebook. She carries a whistle in her
pocket to summon searchers in case of accident in the rugged Tanganyika hills.

Had never read Jane Goodall's original 1963 article in Nat Geo on the wild chimpanzees in Tanzania until now. It's a wonderful blend of science and journalism, and well worth your time.

Excerpt from proposed NOAA budget showing zero funding for Climate Laboratories and Cooperative Institutes

Excerpt from proposed NOAA budget showing zero funding for Climate Laboratories and Cooperative Institutes

Proposed NOAA budget zeros out ALL climate laboratories and cooperative institutions.

GFDL, NSSL, GML, etc.

This appears to also end the US greenhouse gas sampling network, including at Mauna Loa, the oldest continuous carbon dioxide monitoring site on Earth.

In general i agree, i do wonder though, don‘t you think in this case its not so bad because they do not produce a global map, but just one for england, and they do use a lot of survey samples from all over england?

Constraining the time of emergence of anthropogenic signal in the global land carbon sink Abstract. The global land carbon sink has increased since the preindustrial period, driven by increasing atmospheric CO2 concentration and climate change. However, detecting these anthropogenic signal...

How long does it take until we detect forced signals in global and regional land carbon fluxes?

And can we use dynamical adjustment to reduce the noise and shorten the detection time?

It‘s not just that the CO2 curves tell us how much CO2 is rising, but crucially, with the global network (I guess ~50% from noaa stations), we can estimate how the ecosystems and the ocean are responding to this increase. Loosing this would be like going back 30yrs in time…

Trump moves to close facility that helps track planet-warming pollution The lab is connected to the Mauna Loa Observatory, where scientists gather data to produce the Keeling Curve, a chart on the daily status of atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations.

The Trump administration is planning to cancel its lease at a government laboratory in Hawaii, a site where scientists support key observations of surging greenhouse gas levels in the atmosphere, according to a list obtained by Democratic members of Congress and shared with The Post.

Just heard that Trump is putting an end to atmospheric monitoring site NY67 that is run out of my lab. This is one of the oldest NADP sites in the US, continually measuring acid rain and other pollutants since 1977. Closing it down is tragic.
