2. Daniel and his companions didn’t unlock the divine secret to good health by eating only vegetables and water (“The Daniel Fast”). It was the only way they could keep kosher. The remarkable part of the story is that they got FAT on this diet.
May we become better readers of our Bibles in 2026!

Hot Take for the New Year: If you are searching your Bible for some secret diet, you may have lost the plot.
1. Ezekiel 4:9 is not a God-ordained health food; it is siege bread. Think of it as prophetic performance art meant to make people pay attention (and probably disgust them).

“O Come, O Come, Emmanuel” may very well be the most biblically and theologically correct hymn we sing at Christmas (and maybe all year).

There are many things about September 11th that stick with me. But it's the words of a Muslim stranger that I pray I will never forget. #NeverForget911

I have a new theory: the Apostle Paul’s “thorn in the flesh” was the gene that makes cilantro taste like soap.
Just heard Buc-ee’s described as “Gas Pro Shop.” Truer words have never been spoken.
Box of 96 highlighters
I don’t know…this MIGHT be enough highlighters to get me through my dissertation.

Happy Birthday!
I am thankful we have had another peaceful transfer of political leadership in the USA. However, the inauguration provides an opportunity to consider how God's people engage with earthly kingdoms.

Today I became ABD!
An excellent article on the problems with Texas’s new Bible-based curriculum for elementary schools.

As we enter into this Thanksgiving holiday, please remember to exercise responsibility at your family gatherings.
B. It started with a grad-level course on Hebrew Bible and Film. I had no real interest in it, but had to take to fill out my schedule. Ended up setting the direction for my PhD studies and dissertation.
See ya later San Diego. Thanks for hosting a great conference.

Yes. I had to get home a day early.
One of the lingering benefits of my former professional life is lifetime Platinum status on American Airlines.
Today that benefit paid off with a first class upgrade for my return trip home.

Had a fun time presenting on two of the Jephthah’s Daughter films this morning. Lots of good questions and discussion.

I think the issue of pedagogy is an important one for biblical studies. However, my first reaction was that this sounds more like a DMin project than a PhD topic.
Presenting in the Bible and Film section on Sunday morning on how two films about Jephthah’s Daughter engage patriarchy in the early 20th century.

Is this what deconstruction feels like? 😉
Part of my academic training is the understanding that it is necessary to change your views in the face of facts. Today that training was put to the test.
I am forced to admit that San Diego has better Mexican food than Texas—and it’s not even a close competition.
Looking forward to seeing lots of friends and presenting again in the Bible and Film session at SBL/AAR in San Diego next weekend.

Well…not the finale to Spring Break I was hoping for. Fell on the steps while bringing down a load of laundry. Thankfully, no break, but they suspect I may have torn the quad tendon in my right leg. Currently in a leg brace and crutches.
Expect to meet with an orthopedic doctor this coming week.
