Tomorrow in your inboxes: a movie about a killer virus, cruel and incompetent government officials, and other things we have no experience with in recent memory.

The Michael Myers house
Last week I went to the Michael Myers house in Pasadena and no one murdered me which is frankly BS if I’m being real.

The Cenobite Always Rings Twice
On Hellraiser, dir. Clive Barker, 1987; Forbidden Fruits, dir. Meredith Alloway, 2026; and Cannibal, dir. Manuel Martín, 2013.
In which I realize that I am extremely late to the party with respect to Hellraiser’s channeling of continental philosophy. www.deadofnightletter.com/the-cenobite...

Gemma Arterton in Byzantium
This week, quick thoughts on history, setting, and degrees of exploitation in Neil Jordan’s less-famous vampire movie.

Gothic Beach
On Byzantium, dir. Neil Jordan, 2012; Exit 8, dir. Genki Kawamura, 2025; and Crossroads Issue 1: The Long Decade, ed. Candice Bailey and Gavin Lees, 2026.
And I begin reading @crossroadsfolk.bsky.social issue 1, which reveals itself immediately to be a must-read for anyone interested in horror and genre.

Dear god. Very, very serious allegations of mass civil rights violations at the State of Florida's Everglades immigration detention center (officially known as "Alligator Alcatraz").

Gemma Arterton's vampire claims a victim at the beach.
Dropping tomorrow, I’m thinking about gothic beach vibes in Neil Jordan’s Byzantium.

Hope this Yeti movie is an elevated horror—a meditation on the nature of grief or something.

The correct format to watch the Faces of Death movie is on a VHS your older brother’s friend brings over which you peak in on from the next room only to experience lifelong trauma.

Grime
On Folies Meurtrieres, dir. Antoine Pellissier, 1984; 1000 Women in Horror, dir. Donna Davies, 2025; and Humanist Vampire Seeking Consenting Suicidal Person, dir. Ariane Louis-Seize, 2023.
I watched 1000 Women in Horror and, though I was wary of what looked like a familiar kind of talking-heads-and-film-clips pop culture documentary, I found a perfect small panel, and a fascinating inquiry into gender and genre.
