Mrs Burke & Mrs Hare - Historical Novel Society The names of 19th-century body-snatchers Burke and Hare are well known, but Sloan’s fascinating and page-turning novel looks at the women behind them – their wives. William Hare’s wife, Lucky, realises...

'Focuses on the poverty, greed and the dark side of humanity involved in 19th century body-snatching. Violent, chilling and absorbing.'

Not proven verdict to be scrapped as Scottish Parliament backs reforms The verdict has been used in criminal trials for hundreds of years but campaigners had called for it to be abolished.

The real-life heroine of my novel Love and Other Poisons, was Madeleine Smith, found 'not proven' of murder in 1857. What might the verdict have been instead? www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

These mysterious tiny coffins were discovered on Arthur’s Seat, Edinburgh, in 1836: seventeen of them — carefully arranged: two rows of eight, with one placed on top.

Could they be connected to the Burke and Hare murders?

They feature in my novel 'Mrs Burke and Mrs Hare'

Mrs Burke and Mrs Hare - their court sketches from the trial.

Margaret 'Lucky' Hare and Helen 'Nelly' McDougal.

They are reimagined in my book, Mrs Burke and Mrs Hare....it's a dark tale.

Did you know Burke and Hare weren’t actually grave robbers? They murdered people and sold the bodies. But here’s the part history usually skips: their wives knew more than they let on.

That eerie gap is where my novel began.

Mrs Burke and Mrs Hare is out now
