The pebbledash has chipped away on an end terrace revealing a partial ghost sign which so far reads “ask for - RESTFUL - guarantee” possibly an upholsterers? , hoping the rest will be revealed at some point 🤞

Photo of a brick wall with a stone marker inset between white-painted stone lintel and T-shaped sill, the inner edges of which and vertical brick edges around the marker are chamfered. The marker is a white-painted stone rectangle with relief shield form, on which in relief are a carved cross dividing it into quadrants, painted black, with arms terminating in leafy arrowheads. It's surrounded by relief letters painted black: spanning the vertical axis at the top, the initials "WW"; behind and vertically aligned with the horizontal axis, spread to be alongside the arrowheads, "AD"; and split half-and-half between the centre of the bottom two quadrants, "1888", using flat-topped eights. Below and on either side of the shield are a pair of small red and black-painted relief Tudor roses.
One of my enduring interests is the Victorian architectural trend of 17th century-style flat-topped eights. Searching on Instagram is absolutely trash now but #flattoppedeight will still mainly get you my pics. It's been a while since I spotted a good example, here's a triple threat in Stroud Green!

Medieval floor tiles preserved in the south range of Byland Abbey
Intricate geometric and patterned medieval floor tiles preserved in the south aisle of the ruined Byland Abbey church
Fragments of devotion, craft, and daily ritual worn gently back into the earth still whisper of colour beneath monastic feet. Images Byland Abbey Tilman2007 CC BY-SA 4.0

I attended one of James' talks recently (about the recorded experiences of travellers in medieval England) and it was excellent, so looking forward to this.

The sun rising over the London skyline this morning, only it’s a very cloudy sky and the sun is visible only as an orange streak of fire that coincidentally seems to be emanating from the spire on the top of St Paul’s dome

Photo of a cast iron fire hydrant cover set into the pavement. It's covered with small diamond shapes in relief to provide grip when being walked on. A rectangle in relief surrounds large relief letters reading "BH FH 1928". Above and below the rectangle is smaller relief lettering reading "J. Stone & Co. Ltd London S.E.".
Hydrant cover, Church Rd, Highgate. In grand condition for a 97-year-old thanks to low footfall. Cast at Josiah Stone's, Charlton. I had to look up "BH"; if it's the same as you see on council maps, that means borehole. Nearby Highgate Wood is home to the origin of several of north London's brooks.

The front of a small terraced house, the bricks of which have been painted red until ¾ of the way up (the middle of the upper windows), and the pointing of which painted over in bright white in an extremely wobbly way. Many of the vertical lines of pointing in the upper part are slanted to the left, suggesting someone clinging onto a ladder with their left hand and stretching to paint with their right. Oh dear

Super frustrating to be informed that the British Library's digitisation studio "is still not accepting orders, and there is no timescale for when they may resume". How are we supposed to proceed with research intended for publication that needs images?

A lovely pub, happily long moved on from its days as "The Sheepwalk" with a strange yellow coat of paint and an atmosphere inside that made you feel like you might get stabbed if you glanced at the wrong person!

An interesting look at teething issues in the Barbican in 1972 and comparing it to the facilities of the adjacent Golden Lane Council estate, designed 20 years earlier
