Press advertisement for Peterkin Custard. The headline is "Liquid Gold" and, next after this and the brand name, the line "Real Eggs" is most prominent in the copy-heavy execution.
Fading painted sign on a wall with a picture of a boy in yellow clogs and baggy trousers. From Ghost Signs: A London Story "While at first sight the sign appears to be a privilege for a local grocer or bakery, it was in fact located on the premises of the Cato family, oil and colourmen based here at least from 1891 to 1941. They sold a wide range of goods, including paraffin, ironmongery products, paints and thinners. While these seem unlikely bedfellows with Peterkin’s products, wallpaper paste can also contain cornflour, the basis for most custard powders."
In 1926, Peterkin Custard's "Real Eggs" claim came before a court of law, and found to be less than truthful.

A four-story brick industrial building rises against a flat grey sky, its facade bearing the faded painted legend: BAKER MFG. CO. — Monitor — WINDMILLS & ENGINES. The cursive Monitor script anchors the sign like a signature — proud once, now dissolving into the brick. Below, a loading dock with a corrugated metal awning shelters a boarded overhead door, on which someone has drawn a small, incongruous smiley face in spray paint. Bare winter branches reach up from the weeds at the base. Every window is dark, each pane a closed eye.

Although I love to visit Weymouth (& Portland) for the wildlife, I also very much enjoy wandering the streets of the old part of Weymouth, for the architecture & the history. During my recent visit I found some ghost signs & was particularly taken with this one: 'Manures and cakes'! #GhostSigns

The first picture here is a wonderfully explicit illustration of a more recent layer of paint drying out, cracking, and falling off to reveal the ghost signs beneath. That layer is, in turn, also cracking and falling off the wall.
