That's probably the idea, to scare off predators. It's a common feature on many moths' and butterflies' wings for that purpose. :)
I'm not sure if there is a favourite nectar plant for them but I've seen them visit flowering trees such as apple trees and cherry trees. The caterpillars live on Urtica dioica (stinging nettle).
