At of time of so much devastating news, here is a story with a happy ending.

Oops! #phycologyfriday
Hi #Phylogyfriday! Sharing little clip I took of life under a Pterygophora kelp forest in Ucluelet, BC
OPEN biodiversity DATA ALERT: iNaturalist has released range data for 100k+ taxa: www.inaturalist.org/posts/106918 ππ§ͺ
It looks like Maine Sea Grant is being reinstated, thanks in large part to the massive public outcry, including by our working waterfront. Celebrate the wins, because they show us what works and energize us for the next round. πͺπ» π π²
Biodiversity is depleted and large furrows still lie in the seabed where deep-sea mining equipment operated more than 40 years ago.
Remember when having a really old president and questioning his mental acuity was front page news everyday for months?
I love seafood and federal science.

Vamonos! You close to Samana ?
Saw a wicked aggregation of stunning sun anemones whilst snorkeling along a barrier reefs in π©π΄. Any #Anemone π€ nerds out there know cool facts about this species
And me please if that's possible
Today I was told to take out a line about being a mentor to students from diverse backgrounds and historically underrepresented groups from my biosketch for a proposal, because it might damage our chances of getting federal funding.
How has it come to this? I feel absolutely sick.
Trans, intersex, and queer people will always exist because humans are biological creatures and biology - inevitably and always - creates variability and diversity.
If there is any βbiological truth,β itβs that a biological system will never conform to the strictures of human machinations.

Ever wondered what a #Galapagos kelp forest looks like in the upper #mesophotic zone?

Empty barnacle shells in the low intertidal
More empty barnacle shells in the low intertidal
Even more empty barnacle shells
Lots and lots of empty barnacle shells
Interesting observation in the lower intertidal: thousands upon thousands of dead barnacles in the last month or so, with intact shells left behind! (Zoom in and see)
Mid/upper barnacles are all fine, so best guess is that the winter tides allow predators to go unchecked? Very curious. ππ¦

Paper formally outβπͺΈπCold-water corals and sponges can thrive in heterogeneous vertical walls, selecting their preferred habitats. This study highlights how niche differentiation can drive biodiversity in vertical walls and the need to protect these complex deep-sea ecosystems.@dsbsoc.bsky.socialπ
My gord! Sorry man, this is next level shite!
Our Brazil members are currently participing in a workshop and to kick it off, 10 Black Women are getting scuba certified!
Warming up, just not too hard, can help you survive an intense workout. In a new study led by Xinru Li, we found that "priming" - sub-lethal exposure to heat stress - can also help coral reefs survive heat waves... provided the heat waves are not too severe.

Deep sea mining plans blocked in Norway π³π΄π«
Environmental groups described the news as a βhistoric winβ for ocean protection.
Oslo had planned to let companies apply to mine 280,000 sq km (108,000 sq miles) of its waters, an area greater than the UK, for deep-sea minerals.
