‘These connections are overlooked’: how British companies profited from slavery in Brazil long after abolition Britons learn about the country’s involvement ‘almost as a self-congratulatory narrative’, says historian Joseph Mulhern

Really useful thread. On this latter point, worth flagging that British anti-slavery also accommodated (and in some cases legitimised) continued entanglement with global slavery long after 1833-38. For half a century in the case of Brazil: www.theguardian.com/world/2026/m...

Read about how British companies profited from slavery in Brazil longer after abolition, from our @durhamhistory.bsky.social Honorary Fellow Joe Mulhern, in @theguardian.com.

Many thanks! Being able to maintain a link to the excellent research community at @durham.ac.uk @durhamhistory.bsky.social was so important as my career took a different path.

Hoping to get back sooner rather than later to discuss the book and catch up with old friends!

As someone no longer in full-time research, I wasn't sure I'd get this over the line, but here it is!

This is my modest effort to (re)write Brazil into the history of Britain's involvement with transatlantic slavery.

Too many people to thank here but you know who you are!

Boa leitura, gente.

The Ibicaba archive project team probably know him anyway, but he's called José Eduardo Heflinger. I need to be in touch about sending him a copy of my book (he supplied some images) so can send him your article.

Probably not overly helpful as it was some time ago now, but there's a guy in Limeira, SP who had a lot of 19th century material from the surrounding area. I think a lot of it was judicial records that he'd saved from being thrown out but I think he had some private material from fazendas.
