Our UK-wide survey found major variation in:
• Who inserts or removes lines
• Infection prevention practices
• Line dwell times & CRP thresholds
• Post-procedure protocols
It’s time we asked why something so fundamental to dialysis care remains so variable — and whether national guidance is overdue.

#Nephrology has long been a leader in #multidisciplinary, patient-centered care—let’s lead in tackling #inequities within our profession too👊🏽

💡 What we can do as a specialty:
🔹 Recognize and address biases in recruitment, retention, and leadership
🔹 Support mentorship and sponsorship for underrepresented groups
🔹 Conduct nephrology-specific research on workplace equity and career progression

📢 Nephrology colleagues—this research is a wake-up call.

Biases in medicine affect career progression, leadership opportunities, and even patient care. Yet, nephrology remains underrepresented in research on gender, race, and ethnicity bias. Our study highlights the gaps—now we need action

1 year ago 1 0 1 0

Call to Action
🔬 The data is clear: bias in medicine is real and under-researched. We need:
📌 More research on race, ethnicity, and intersectionality
📌 Focus on interventions—not just problems
📌 Diverse leadership in medical research

1 year ago 0 0 1 0

The Bigger Picture
This research is just the beginning. The lack of studies on racial and ethnic bias and the absence of intervention research highlights a critical need for action. We call for a more inclusive and solution-focused research agenda in medicine! 🌍📢 #EquityInMedicine #AcademicResearch

Key Findings
🔎 Key findings from our study:
✅ Career progression, discrimination, and motherhood were mostly studied by female authors
✅ Burnout and mental health were predominantly studied by male authors
✅ Few studies examined race and ethnicity bias!

Why We Did This Research and
Why does bias in medicine persist?
Despite progress, female and minority ethnic doctors face career barriers, lower pay, and fewer leadership opportunities. Our study explores the authorship trends and key themes in research on medical workplace bias. 📊📖

🚨 New research alert! 🚨 Our latest study, published in BMJ Open, explores gender, race, and ethnicity biases experienced by hospital physicians. We conducted an umbrella review to map the evidence and highlight key gaps. Read more here bmjopen.bmj.com/content/bmjo...

Before she goes, she takes one last sip of coffee, looks up, and asks, “Will it all be worth it?”

I smile, knowing the late nights, the sacrifices, the moments of doubt, and the juggling act of medicine, motherhood, and leadership.

“Every bit of it.”
