Definitely a #phdjourney highlight for me to give @browncaas.bsky.social rounds yesterday! I presented 3 of my xylazine focused studies, two of which informed my dissertation work, and one that is included in my dissertation. Sort of felt like a dress rehearsal for my eventual defense!

Some Friday news! My NIDA F31 was reinstated this afternoon after being terminated last month!! This is such encouraging news, and I hope that other investigators whose work was illegally terminated soon receive the news that their work can continue!

Key Takeaways:

☑️Contamination events & bag mixups much more common than intentional adulteration

☑️No one reported purposefully adding fentanyl to stimulants - which would be bad for business

☑️Supply-side harm reduction is urgently needed to reduce manufacturing & distribution errors

We asked ppl incarcerated for drug manufacturing & distribution how fentanyl ends up in stimulants & their insights challenge assumptions about intentional adulteration!

So what does this mean? 🤔🧐

- there could be issues accessing GA surgery for those with Medicare 🚨
- trans beneficiaries, like all beneficiaries, work hard to access their coverage & should have the ability to access medical care that they need just like all beneficiaries ⚖️

Gender-Affirming Surgery for Transgender and Gender Diverse Medicare Beneficiaries This cross-sectional study examines the frequency and trends of gender-affirming surgical procedures for transgender and gender diverse Medicare beneficiaries from 2016 to 2020.

Excited to share our latest pub, lead by @brownpublichealth.bsky.social PhD candidate Em Balkan showing:

- gender-affirming surgery is rare in Medicare program
- trans beneficiaries in the South are less likely to receive GAsurgery than those in the Northeast US

How did popcorn come to be so closely associated with watching a movie? The first theater to sell popcorn really changed the world with that one. 🍿 🎥 🤔

Frustrated and angered by the rise in headlines like “They voted for Trump, now [predictable harmful action Trump promised] is happening, and they regret it.”

What breaks my heart about the attacks on the educational infrastructure for our youth - and in particular our youth with disabilities - is that a nation that does not ensure its children receive quality education is destined for dark days for generations
