Emergency Department & Hospital Utilization (January - September 2025) With 5,071 emergency department visits and 1,542 hospitalizations in 2025, Edmonton leads all Alberta municipalities. This places sustained pressure on acute care capacity, staffing, and downstream health services. Edmonton's ED visit count alone is higher than Calgary's, despite a smaller population. This asymmetry demands province-level recognition and targeted resource allocation to Edmonton's primary and acute care networks, community mental health and substance use strategies, housing, disability supports, and harm reduction services.
