“In Finland, the number of homeless people has fallen sharply. Those affected receive a small apartment & counselling with no preconditions. 4 out of 5 people affected make their way back to a stable life. And all this is CHEAPER than accepting homelessness.”
IT SAVES PUBLIC MONEY to house people.

The Forest Service just told Congress to go pound sand. Forest Service Chief Tom Schultz appeared before the House Appropriations Committee this week and made it clear the agency is moving forward with
There was also a spot along the auto tour where they had two of those metal telescopes you see at viewpoints, set up to look at the birds. They were free and worked really well. Which boggled my mind. Usually those things are pretty much useless.
Yesterday we also went to the Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge in Willows, Ca. I’d never noticed it before but we planned to do this road trip slow and stop anywhere that seemed interesting. It was really pretty and definitely worth visiting. Saw a bald eagle, a ring-necked pheasant, and more.
An old Southern Pacific train caboose with a sign saying Motel pointing right at it. Picturesque area with lots of trees. And a tiny person hanging off the back of the train car.
Last night we slept in an old refurbished train caboose!
Here’s my guess- Bluesky is public, unlike your group chats. I think we want to post about fun things here but worry we’ll look frivolous and uncaring if we don’t mention the atrocities. In a group chat everyone has the context of knowing one another and their beliefs/values.
As far as I know there is literally no reason for this, it is just an incredibly lucky coincidence that we get to enjoy for free
I want to like this 1000 times
I need the joy so I can continue to multitask at my spite. And this morning I'm not sure there is any dichotomy quite as sharp as four nerds asking us to love our shared humanity, and a narcissist whose brain is entirely racist pudding threatening to end an entire civilization via shitpost.
"It’s a bright spot on the moon,” CSA astronaut Jeremy Hansen said, his voice breaking up, “and we would like to call it Carroll.”
The crew all shared a hug after.

That's pretty cool...
This is an interesting take. I don’t have an opinion at the moment, but wanted to say thanks for writing this.
They're going to have to update the opening credits to Star Trek: Enterprise
Close up with a beautiful nudibranch on a rocky reef. The lower half of the image is a palette of swatches made from the nudi's vibrant colours.
Once upon a time I just admired nudis and sea slugs.
But it was not enough. Now apparently I'm creating an R package to celebrate their colour palettes? 😅
First up, my Sydney fave, Hypselodoris bennetti.

I stand by my assertion that Sinners on Broadway would do looooooong-run numbers. A fixture, a steady on the street, like Book of Mormon, Hamilton, Chicago
I’ve had 3 people so far this year offer me free tickets to musical theater that I already had tickets to. And once to a show I didn’t know was happening!
Feeling good about where my personal brand is at - the person people invite when they want to see a musical :-D
NO NO NO YOU DON’T

Though I haven’t started playing yet, and hadn’t even looked up anything about it, I still knew instinctively this was about Slay the Spire 2.
Soon I will also damage the architect!
Bob Hoskins on Super Mario Brothers:
‘I didn’t even know it was a game, my kids told me. ‘What are you doing next, dad?’
‘Super Mario Brothers.’
‘Oh, that’s a game.’
‘What?’
And they showed me this thing jumping up & down.
‘This is you.’
And I thought: ‘I used to play King Lear.’

More little things that make me happy:
We have a case designed specifically for carrying devilled eggs.
It has slots for 18 egg halves.
Whoever designed it knew that a few of your dozen eggs will always be sacrificial - broken, taste-testing, etc.
Still get to show up with a beautifully full case.
Do you have any rituals or habits when you sit down to write, to get yourself in the right headspace? If so, what are they?

You don’t happen to have a BetaMax machine, do you? I have a bunch of old home movies on Beta that I want to get digitized.
One of my favorite random little things of the internet age:
Reading the menu online before going out for a meal with friends.
It’s so nice to not try to awkwardly read a menu and make a decision while at the same time chatting and catching up with a friend.
@evacide.bsky.social the book you recommended is on sale at a steep discount! Just picked it up.
