When I'm perplexed
by life hurling stones,
I rifle through them
for calming jade
then decline
all the sharp ones
I can—
throwing them back.
Still some
jagged edges tear,
& those scars
I wear proudly,
like stylish tattoos
inscribed on my soul—
no longer quite pain
so I won't forget
I survived.

Feelings stab
like the sharp horn
of a karkadann
here again—
lost in the undersea flow
of nostalgic memories,
thinking I won't drown
