Rejecting the Startup Hustle at Tenkin Studios 🛑
In tech, launching a product is usually "crunch time"—cold coffee, 3 am monitors, and the badge of burnout. The industry says if you aren't exhausted, you aren't trying.
Simon and I decided there's another way. 🧵 1/8
As we move closer to launching our first three apps, I’ve been reflecting on how well-being needs to be at the core of how we operate if we want to truly deliver that for our Portal Pass community. 🌿
Post 5/5
We’re entering this launch with our eyes open and our values intact. We aren't starting with a "perfect" product.
We’re starting with a healthy process.

We don't have all the answers. Launching three apps at once is a massive undertaking, and the road ahead is uncertain. There will be bugs to squash and lessons to learn.
But we aren't worried about the destination; we’re focused on the footing.
Post 3/5
You can’t pour from an empty cup. We realised early on that if we built tools for well-being while sacrificing our own mental health, the foundation would be hollow.
So, we’re prioritising rest and honouring boundaries. Our "launch mode" includes family dinners and full nights of sleep. 🌙
Post 2/5
The industry says if you aren't exhausted, you aren't trying. We disagree.
As we prepare to launch our first three apps, we keep coming back to one question: If we can’t find peace behind the scenes, how can we possibly hope to build it for you? 🌿
the long road leading into Glencoe in Scotland. It's an atmospheric but beautiful scene.

In the startup world, this is usually the part where the music gets frantic. It’s "crunch time"—defined by cold coffee, 3 am flickering monitors, and the prideful badge of burnout.
But at Tenkin Studios, Simon and I have decided to pull the plug on that narrative. 🔌
Co-founder @davidtennent.bsky.social talks about the power of giving community a voice at the BBC.
Something he hopes to build on through Tenkin Studios 🙌

Post 1/3
We talk about 'productivity hacks,' but rarely about the 'sensory drag' that kills focus before the workday begins.
I’m in Dundee this week for a workshop. Normally, I’d work at a cramped hotel room desk. Today, I found a reception area with soft lighting, comfy chairs, and quiet music.

Watching them go from scripting to presenting is a joy—and let’s be honest, it’s got to be better than maths! 🎥🎙️
7/7 The best UX doesn’t shout about its features. It quietly enables you to reach your goals while looking beautiful.
We’re iterating based on your feedback to get this balance just right. 🧱✨ #UXDesign #PortalPass #BuildInPublic
6/7
At Tenkin Studios, we want our apps to feel effortless to use but expensive to own. It’s not just about what the app does; it’s about how it feels when you’re doing it.
5/7
So, how do we balance "simple" with "beautiful"? We’re focusing on three pillars:
1️⃣ Progressive Disclosure: Hide the power-user tools behind secondary layers.
2️⃣ Micro-interactions: Adding "tactile" polish to every button press.
3️⃣ Negative Space: Using "room to breathe" as a luxury feature.
4/7
But here’s the twist: The Aesthetic-Usability Effect.
In 1995, Hitachi researchers found that users perceive "pretty" interfaces as more usable, even if they aren't! Aesthetics create a positive emotional response that masks minor friction.
3/7
This is backed by Hick’s Law: The more choices you give someone, the longer it takes them to make a decision. To keep our community in "flow," we’re obsessively reducing the number of primary calls-to-action at every stage.
2/7
Our North Star is Low Friction UX. If a UI creates drag or confusion, it’s a failure. Good UX is about stripping away the "noise"—unnecessary buttons and complex navigation—that leads to user overwhelm.

As we build out the first @PortalPass apps, we’ve run into a fascinating design tension: How do you keep an interface powerful without making it a cluttered mess?
It’s the battle between Hick’s Law and the Aesthetic-Usability Effect. Let’s dive in. 👇
Post 4/4
Seeing the power of a community-led voice has been transformative for Simon and me. We’re hoping we can take some of that magic and translate it into the Portal Pass community.
When you listen, amazing things happen. ✨

On a personal level, this journey forced me to fully embrace my own neurodivergence. It taught me I’m so much more than the challenges I face.
The "secret sauce"? The community. Their lived experience turned into the research and guides that actually moved the needle.
