Using multiple lines of evidence, we show that feral cats and red foxes are strongly implicated in most Australian mammal extinctions and in the ongoing imperilment of numerous extant species. academic.oup.com/bioscience/a...

New technologies are revolutionising ecology, with more data than ever available at our fingertips. But what are the costs and perils of ecologists doing less field work?

An historic illustration of a (very elongated) wombat.
Happy #WombatDay! "This animal has not any claim to swiftness of foot". This is one of our favourite quotes from the historic literature ("An account of the English colony in New South Wales", David Collins, 1804) biodiversitylibrary.org/page/45924805 via

The latest Australian University wanting to diminish science capacity and training. At least 18 academic staff in the science faculty threatened with job loss. A petition to save science at #QUT Queensland University of Technology here www.change.org/p/stop-force...
As a previous staff member of this faculty I'm alarmed at the proposed forced redundancies!

Is passive acoustic monitoring worth it for terrestrial mammals? 🎙️🐨
We find it's not the one for all solution, but for vocal species, yes! It's highly effective & saves lots of time and money, especially in the long-term.

This #MarsupialMonday we bring you a trio of critters: the fat-tailed dunnart, the yellow-footed antechinus and the red-tailed phascogale.
On the hunt for an Antechinus arktos. Plus not a bad view.

Happy #MarsupialMonday! Have you met our little friend, the #SandhillDunnart?
Often called a “marsupial mouse” 🐀 the nocturnal dunnart is a carnivorous critter who likes to feed on invertebrates: think ants, spiders, termites, etc. In the rare periods when food is scarce, they can enter torpor.
It’s #3MT season, and #PhDstudent Abby talks about this important little mouse and its impact on the world. Head to the link to watch and vote (by simply liking the video on YouTube) to help raise awareness about the tiny mouse and help Abby win!
