There’s no quick fix for Curlews – and no single silver bullet.
Recovery will take long term commitment, collaboration and action over decades, not seasons.
But if we stay committed, they’ll bounce back.

The Action Plan will work towards:
• A UK Curlew Recovery Taskforce to coordinate action
• A strategic Wader Recovery Areas, covering over 50% of current populations
• Practical, funded support for Curlew friendly farming
• Evidence based predator management
• Monitoring, research and innovation
Now following the Parliamentary launch in the Lords this January, the UK Curlew Action Plan sets out a path to recovery.
Led by the RSPB through the LIFE Curlew project, and developed with experts and partners across the UK, its our chance to save these birds.

Curlews nest and raise their young on the ground – for up to nine weeks from egg laying to fledging, that leaves eggs and chicks exposed to:
• High levels of predators
• Intensive farming operations
• Disturbance from dogs and recreation
• Loss of breeding habitat to development and land use change
The key issue is simply too few chicks are surviving to fledging. As older birds die, there aren’t enough young Curlews coming through to replace them.
The UK holds around a quarter of Europe’s breeding population. That means the future of Curlews depends on what we do.
And honestly, the challenge is stark.
UK breeding Curlew numbers have fallen by around 50% since the mid 1990s.
Happy #WorldCurlewDay!
With their haunting call and wild beauty it’s the day to shine a light on an amazing species in real trouble.
We joined MPs and Lords today to celebrate the new UK Curlew Action Plan.
The announcement comes as Defra unveils a new campaign: Wild Again: Restoring England’s Wildlife as part of its efforts to protect and recover nature.
The UK Govt has announced £90m for species recovery.
England’s most threatened wildlife needs urgent action so it's an important step, though further cross-cutting action is needed for the UK Govt to hit its own recovery goals 👇

The ban on poisonous lead ammunition in outdoor shooting is law!
Thank you to the thousands who spoke up. We’ve thrown wildlife a lifeline. Now, 100,000 waterbirds will be saved every single year.
When we raise our voices together - we make change happen 👇

Great to see coordinated proposals from Westminster, Scottish and Welsh govts for stronger restrictions on shooting rare and Red-listed birds including Pochards, Goldeneyes and Woodcocks.
UK-wide, joined up action will be critical for their recovery.

This is our chance to treat land as the precious finite national treasure it is, and reach our goal of protecting 30% of land for nature whilst delivering the homes, renewable energy and sustainable farmland we need.
We cannot afford to get this wrong.

For this to succeed, the UK Government has to act together.
That means DEFRA, MHCLG the Treasury and every department that shapes how England builds, grows and uses our land.
These cause rows, delays, appeals, frustration and are costing us all time we don’t have.
This Framework could unlock win-wins and cut the pointless clashes holding everything back.
We need to step away from making siloed decisions or one-off ‘fixes’ that create new problems.
We waste too much time and money on bad trade-offs.
Wind turbines on carbon rich peat. Homes built on habitats that rare species depend on...
England’s land is under pressure.
Nature, farming, homes, energy and transport are all competing for the same finite space.
The Land Use Framework announced by the UK Government today is England’s chance to start making long-term, strategic decisions that are good for everyone.
Thank you to the thousands who spoke up!
Your voices helped avoid a disaster for nature - but there's still more to do.
Campaigners outside SSE's offices in Glasgow holding a banner which reads: "Stop Berwick Bank"
Today we gathered outside SSE's Glasgow office to urge them to stop the Berwick Bank offshore wind farm.
Together we delivered a petition signed by 12,500 people opposing this damaging project.

We’re off track, but not out of time.
What happens in the next few years will decide whether the UK delivers on its global commitments.

RSPB analysis highlights the big shifts needed now:
Restore habitats at scale, not in pockets.
Speed up land and sea protection, with real management, not just maps.
Back nature friendly farming.
Strengthen business responsibility, ensuring nature impacts are properly accounted for.
The report arrives alongside stark wider warnings, including a national security review showing how biodiversity loss threatens the UK’s long‑term stability.
Nature loss isn’t just environmental.
It’s a security risk, an economic risk, and a resilience risk.

When it comes to our crucial target of protecting 30% of land and sea by 2030, the government report gives a dismal ranking of “progress made but at an insufficient rate.”
We have to be meeting that if we want a chance at a nature‑positive future – and now, across the UK, we have a long way to go.
Another report, the same story – but louder.
We're way off track.
With just four years left until 2030, the UK’s Seventh National Report shows we’re failing 19 out of 23 nature targets.
It’s more proof that progress simply isn’t keeping pace with reality 👇

Many MPs claim to care about nature.
Tomorrow afternoon will be the test.
On Tuesday 3rd March there will be a debate in Parliament on red lines for nature.
We’ll be watching to see who shows up. Empty seats will say a lot.
Tell us who you expect to see there tomorrow. 👇
A Westminster Hall debate on nature has been announced for tomorrow.
Urge your MP to show up and speak out.
Let’s make this a turning point so we can put nature at the heart of politics 👇

The Prime Minister is backing recommendations that could strip away vital nature protections and leave some of our most important wild places exposed to damaging development.

It was a reset. Let’s make it count!
