Help a reporter: I'm looking for experts on special education inclusion, who should I be talking to? For a story.
Excited to share a new open-access practitioner paper all about: (a) avoiding using the keywords strategy, and (b) what word-problem strategies to use instead! We focused specifically on how to support students with mathematics difficulty and emergent bilinguals. doi.org/10.1002/trtr...

“…cognitive load theory doesn’t matter where there is no cognitive load, because there is no explicit teaching”
“some students may be engaging with discovery/project-based learning in ways that are mentally taxing for them, but many will instead be doing busy-work.”

I went to get a digital journal article from the library & found that it was no longer available because DOGE decided to cancel most of ERIC (the database of education journal articles that schools & researchers use to improve education practices). Y'all, this is tantamount to book burning.
Gracie is one of my favorite collaborators! She is a whiz with R and will make sure your project moves at a steady pace.
My very favorite part of the podcast was when you mentioned wanting to see more data about what instruction is actually occurring most often in schools. There is so much unknown! I would love to see Dr. Otten’s study with middle/high school teachers replicated with elementary schools.
Using manipulatives, visuals, and precise language to support conceptual understanding seems to be supported in both SPED and Math Ed spaces (from my limited view and experience as a PhD student).
I think there is a lot more agreement about the balance of conceptual/procedural than was characterized in the podcast. I interpret that page on the SoM website as emphasizing the importance of both- not a claim that procedures will result in conceptual understanding.
So grateful for Sarah and for the PRIME team!

You can't spell Science of Reading without IES. Created by Congress in 2002. Dedicated to providing accessible scientific research into effective educational practices. Critical to reading research.
Cuts to the Institute of Education Sciences = cuts to research, data & tools that help kids—especially struggling readers & students w/ disabilities. Tell Congress: Protect IES funding. #StandUpForReadingResearch
