Warhead

Seeds burst from the barrels of flowerheads.
There was traffic here once. Listen. Listen.
Ghosts. Bustling, raucous silence elbows treads
invisible in wounded streets, broken.

The seeds strike, make hollows of busy homes.
Absences are in full bloom, vibrant glades.
Stroll between rainbow-bloomed borders of bones.
Inhale aromatic fragrant dead shades.

This city a garden of the fresh gone.
Snipers make spaces for new shoots to grow.
Refugees tell the way it carried on.
Their stories keep their children in the know.

They rename their city atrocity.
Actual help is needed, not pity.

The dog encounters a hedgehog for the first time

it was…
the size of a bear
a large bear
teeth
glinting in moonlight

spikes…
everywhere
like knitting needles
only longer
sharper

I saw it off
chased it away
well
I would have
if it hadn’t
prickled my nose

…ouch

Good morning @dragonslayerma.bsky.social, what a great #PromptCombo - #NatureHasWeapons. This true story came to mind so sharing it before diving into meetings. Slightly less serious than my usual poems!

Believe What You Know.

I should have known after so many years.
To look blind at decades, rewind, reshape,
find childhood remainders by stains and tears,
lost acres of land, solid woodcrete gapes.

I should have known memories lichen-gild.
Hedgerows, stickleback-ditch, meadow playground,
fertilise car-engine growth, oil new builds.
Village becomes town, town sprawls unbound.

I know the jaywalk throws down ruderal
invitations to grout creases with flyby seeds.
Rye smiles by dog-pee corners and all
waste-ground overtaken by so-called weeds.

I have known with admiration, pioneers.
Maginalised in strength, dispersed in hope.

JS

Or prompts suggesting different forms? Haha, I'm not at all disturbed. Have a good weekend, Sue

Yes, although I've come to like tricky prompts (like this week) because they make me think and stop me being lazy and digging into old poems

There was a dead tree, hollowed out in front of a house we used to live in as children, that fulfilled a very similar role
