English ‘friend’ and its West Germanic cognates are quite different from North Germanic words such as Danish ‘ven’.

‘Friend’ stems from a present participle meaning “loving”. It’s related to ‘free’ and ‘Friday’.

The English cognate of ‘ven’ was lost, although it lingers in names such as ‘Godwin’:

Exacto.

This week is the #TapatiFestival, a celebration of the culture and traditions of Rapa Nui (Easter Island).

Long thought to have spread from West Polynesia with the first settlers, radiocarbon dates suggest some ritual practices originate on the island.
