My mother tongue is Mexican #Spanish but the native language of my home region is Yucatec Maya - one of the 68 recognized #Mexican national languages - spoken by 800,000 people in the #Yucatan Peninsula.

English ‘friend’ and its West Germanic cognates are quite different from North Germanic words such as Danish ‘ven’.
‘Friend’ stems from a present participle meaning “loving”. It’s related to ‘free’ and ‘Friday’.
The English cognate of ‘ven’ was lost, although it lingers in names such as ‘Godwin’:
