Q&A: Employment Insurance Q: If I apply for EI sickness benefits, do I have to quit my job? A: No. In Alberta, eligible workers can take up 27 weeks off work for medical reasons. In most cases, you cannot be terminated for taking time off to recover or heal from illness or injury, including a physical or mental health condition. If you have applied for EI sickness benefits, you should not quit your job.

Workers often ask us if they should quit their job when they need to collect EI because they are sick or injured. If your boss has asked you to quit or has fired you because you need medical leave, we can help. Visit helpwrc.org and click "GET HELP" to start.
