Hey everyone heading to Boston for conferences, gentle encouragement to NOT BUY STARBUCKS as your conference fuel. Starbucks baristas are on strike across the country for fair wages and safe working conditions!

Also, we're about to be in Boston, drink Dunkin. #sblaar25 #asor25

The ‘can machines do creative writing’ thing is mostly a distraction from the use of the machines to go through text and images to cancel grants and put people on deportation lists

You're laughing. Some people don't know the plot of the Odyssey and you're laughing.

A lot of #sblaar is choose your own adventure, so I've almost exclusively been around great people and great scholarship/discipleship, but it's always jarring to walk past a display of books proudly declaring that I cut the image of God out of myself by accessing gender affirming care

First stop of #sblaar 2024 is the coffee shop where I worked on a seminar paper during SBL 2019 - maybe I should come back later and work on another paper (one that I'm definitely not presenting on Tuesday)

I should get hazard pay for being a straight cis woman's Classics TA, double for when she talks about queer theory or casts Kate McKinnon as Lysistrata

So what do you do when you have a draft of a single chapter of your dissertation and you're already out of ideas?

There's a Nestorian church in Assassin's Creed Mirage - is this how it felt to be a Classicist when AC Odyssey came out? Now that they're talking about heresy, nestorius, and the church of the east, I'm pretty sure I can count this as my research.

Petition to make Syriac letters look less like each other in fonts (unfortunately this has been done but not before the Margoliouths typed up the texts I'm using)

My research began and ended with this website telling me it was 1995 lol, but now I'm actually kind of curious

My DND notes or my dissertation?

"The monk's bodily experience is not confined to the material plane alone."

Oh my gosh I've seen these advertised before but haven't actually got one yet, love that they're fantastic!

it’s sad reading like 14th century Christian theologians who spent an inordinate amount of time writing “OK there are exactly 3,892 demons and these are their names and these are their powers”… man, you would have loved Dragonball Z

Is there a reason for results on the library website coming up as "search only (no full text)" other than to frustrate me? At this point I think I might be Tantalus

I've been working on a project that requires me to skim & curate a lot of late antique sources, and I think I've spent at least five hours a day on e-clavis!! Highly recommend this to everyone (& thanks to all the contributors for their work!!)

the reason academics should shut out generative AI is not because of handwringing about plagiarism

it's because it's not a moral technology. we know that it's not. and it's not yet so omnipresent that we can't choose to divest

My blsky feed (academics mostly not at UM): yay first day of school tomorrow! Here's a cool idea for a syllabus!

My twitter feed (UM academic): Wolverine Access, and canvas are down, my house has no power, and email is also down so I can't tell my students that the apocalypse is nigh

Apologies to all the public library goers of Ann Arbor who thought they would take their kids to the library for a nice day before school started only to run across me researching the imagery of hell in public. Please join me in billing therapy hours to UM.

Listen I'm taking the transphobia seriously, but this is also how I learned that chess tournaments are separated by gender? Is there a real explanation for this? And should we start a nonbinary official chess league so that I can become a chess champion despite being terrible at the game?

You May Be Unintentionally Telling Students Your Course is Inaccessible to Them As summer is winding down, academics around the northern hemisphere are beginning to contemplate writing syllabi for their fall courses. And...

Semesterly reminder that I wrote a guide to making your syllabus accessible

An organizing intern with some unionization stuff with staff and hospital workers at UM (much closer to what I want to do after this degree!)

This fall, I'm neither teaching or really taking classes, just trucking on my diss thanks to fellowship. That being said, I AM starting a new job/internship, and this soft-launch of post-academic life is enough to make me REAL existential rn

I've never cooked with or really eaten beets before, but I got some in my CSA box and pickled them, and my life is CHANGED

That's definitely helping me with the lack of bookmarks, because otherwise I'd be losing all the things I need to come back to (usually books I want to read lol)

Adding a new line to my CV about my incredible ability to pick out a perfectly ripe melon at the farmers market. Of everything already on the CV, this is clearly the most useful

When I briefly had an ADHD coach, she asked me what kind of task management I did. I had to confess that I used 5 types of calendars (3 printed) and I had to be told to cut back and combine them (which I thought was a unique experience but turns out is just a canonical event). Anyway I never did lol
