An old magic lantern slide of Waterford dated 1894. This is John's Bridge, part of which dates to the 1600's. The bridge was enlarged in 1765 under mayor John Lyon. In the center background is the roof of the old Waterford and Tramore railway station, demolished in 1970.

Stay Quiet

He's so sick
of the TV's endless bellow,
the stench of faces and mashed potatoes but

Grandad never complains
even as his surgery gets postponed over and over,
bruises on his arms like berry compote.

He knows not to stir, that one patient
was murdered by another
for weeping all night.

My first Luas trip, a man, high
or drunk, groped my grandfather's skull,
giggled at his grey curls, twirled them around

his knuckles before smoothing
them flat as the field of maize.
Grandad sat as if at a barbers and waited

for the guy with a knife poking
from his pocket to stagger away.
All he had lost by then -

his wife, seven border collies.
I was shaking, nine years old, without a ticket.
We're invisible, Grandad whispered.

Missed my granddad's anniversary mass this morning because I've not enough petrol to get there aha. So here's a small poem and a candle emoji πŸ•―οΈ and I'll think about him on my lil silly walk πŸšΆβ€β™€οΈ

A Lay of St. Boniface: A Poem in Alliterative Verse by Patricia Masson Now we stood stone-still, and in stark horror / gazed into that gap ‧ where our god had been steadfast / since middle-earth’s making,

Pat Masson's best poem was also first published on Forgotten Ground Regained. "A Lay of St. Boniface" reimagines Boniface's chopping down of a sacred pagan oak from the point of view of the intended sacrifice. It is both deep and dramatic -- well worth reading.

Today is the birthday of Pat Masson (1940-1994), a writer who died young and unknown, yet wrote some of the best poetry of the modern alliterative revival. I found two of her poems in obscure journals: "Hymn to Earendil" in Mallorn and "Dragon-Fighter" in Withowinde.
