A remark from a referee ~40 yr back prompted this study. I launched it under the (later seen) wrong premise that it would last ~15 yr. But my marked plants lived much longer than anticipated, and it took me 38 yr to complete it. Here are the results. I defeated my plants in the race for survival.

Group leaders! The uptake of this paper suggests to me that folk aren’t talking enough about experimental design with their students? Has experimental design fallen off the syllabus? Is a sense of experimental design like a sense of humour? Everyone thinks they have a good one but….?

We suggest that warming 🌡️ and drought will likely induce shifts in the foraging habits of Collembola, mainly by increasing their reliance on mycorrhizal fungi as a result of climate-induced declines in their preferred saprotrophic diets 🍄
