Yes, transit is heavily subsidized. And the cost of transit is typicca not the main barrier to using transit, including among low income people

The title and text here is ignoring two critical support factors:
1) Better service: "In 2021, the city startied running more buses, streamlining routes"
2) The increased parking fees, which funds transit but also discourages driving.

The road leading to state's mass transit package The heart of the transit funding package is a decision to use all state motor fuel sales taxes to fund mass transit instead of sending that cash to the Road Fund.

We end by caling for a global effort to develop and implement adaptation and mitigation practices that improve readiness and lower vulnerability in the Global South.

Finally, we extend the spatial and temporal analyses by Patz and Althor. Our analysis identifies China as a growing contributor to CO2 emissions, though not when population size is accounted for. We further identify EU countries that have been reducing CO2 emissions in recent years.

But our analysis also extends Patz and Althor’s work. First, we link vulnerability with readiness. Global North countries have higher levels of readiness alongside low vulnerability. In contrast, Global South countries have low levels of readiness alongside high vulnerability.

The findings echo previous work by Patz el al (2007) and Althor et al (2016), showing how Global North countries disproportionately contribute to CO2 emissions and climate change while Global South countries are most vulnerable to climate-related health risks.

Who Doesn’t Have a Car? A new NRDC map shows car-free living and the factors affecting car usage in United States.

Ok this is brilliant. Nearly every transportation planning decision prioritizes the car, but cars aren't available or desired by everyone and that's gotta change. Bravo @nrdc.org

Good question. I guess two things a little surprised me. One is that even seemingly regular issues like hot sunny weather (normal in a desert) can make people miss important (medical) appointments. And 2 was that solar pannels are not enough for daily electricity use

Bedouin villages that not recognized by the state are not connected to the national power (or water/sewage) grid. Residents rely on private solar panels for power, yet these systems do not supply enough energy for all home appliances. And solar panels are less efficient on very warm or cloudy days.

A few examples:
People without a car often miss school or health treatments to avoid taking public transit or walking on hot days, especially where there is lack of shade in the public realm.

Inadequate stormwater systems flood streets, which in turn flood people’s homes.

Findings from 10 focus groups with vulnerable Israeli Negev desert residents identify the direct and cascading pathways through which the malfunction or absence of critical infrastructures affect climate-related health risks and the practices that individuals adopt to cope with these effects.

Generating Affordable and Abundant Transit-Oriented Development in Washington State What strategies can Washington use to further increase the availability of housing, especially affordable housing, in mixed-use neighborhoods near transit? In this report, we recommend ways to get the...

Washington state has grown quickly, especially near transit. But some areas around stations are unaffordable for people with low & moderate incomes. How can transit-oriented development (TOD) make neighborhoods thriving & diverse?

We investigate this in new research @urbaninstitute.bsky.social!

The Italian city of Bologna lowered the speed limit to 30kmh (~19mph) on two thirds of city streets, and the safety benefits of slower traffic are obvious. In 2023, 21 residents were hit and killed by drivers, but last year no pedestrians died due to traffic violence. 🚸

Today on Volts: you may have noticed that some climate/energy types (like me) have become obsessed with housing & urban land use lately. Why? Why are they climate issues? What's the connection? The great @mateosfo.bsky.social and I attempt to answer those questions.
